• Wide World of Logs

    Online event

    Topic: Wide World of Logs

Abstract: Auditing in Microsoft Azure, how to audit a modern data warehouse with minimal effort?
As cloud workloads keep growing on Microsoft Azure, I had the following thought, what is the best way for me to track my Data environment quickly without requiring additional effort.

    About the presenter: Sarath Boppudi.
Sarath is based in Brisbane, Australia and works as a Data Strategist and Cloud solutions Architect in BiTQ, a consulting company focusing on Cloud and Data Architecture. His core skills are in Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Big Query in Google. He enjoys everything to do with Data and Architecture. Outside of work, he is one of the organisers for the Brisbane AI User Group and a blogger.

  • SQL Server Q&A - Ask us anything

    Online event

I've been fielding a lot of SQL Server questions on LinkedIn over the last couple of days, it might be easier to have an online session and everyone can ask away. - Adrian

Ask us anything related to SQL Server.

High Availability, performance tuning, how indexes work.. if DBCC really is as important as we say.
You name it and we'll answer your question.. we might even answer it correctly.

  • Transact-SQL Tips & Recommendations (Online Event)

    Online event

Come join Milos Radivojevic, Data Platform MVP, as he shares Transact-SQL tips that can help you to avoid performance and functionality issues with your code running on SQL Server.

Milos will start with a few tips related to issues with functions (both user-defined and built-in) and demonstrate what the usage of local variables means for execution plans and performance, and how to avoid common problems.
You will see how Transact-SQL can help you to avoid scalability issues caused by (over)using foreach loops in the data access layer of application code.
We will then contribute to evergreen and esoteric discussion – what is faster: subquery or JOIN. We will compare the performance of queries written by using window functions and the APPLY operator to see what is faster.
My favorite tip of the day is to use hints for solving performance problems very carefully. There might be a huge difference between solving a root cause issue and a workaround, and hints are usually workarounds. I will demonstrate this by tuning a very simple, but very slow query in a large database. You will see when and why hints can be used, and when we can stop with query tuning – when the query is good enough.
If time permits, I will share tips related to database constraints and performance and some handy tricks such as finding a difference between two rows in a table that has 100+ columns.

Miloš Radivojević is the principal database consultant at Bwin (the world's largest regulated online gaming company) located in Vienna, Austria. He is Data Platform MVP and specializes in SQL Server for application developers and performance and query tuning. He is co-founder of the SQL Pass Austria and speaks regularly at database conferences. He is also co-author of the books SQL Server 2016 Developer's Guide, SQL Server 2017 Developer's Guide, and Mastering SQL Server 2017.

Migrating an existing on-premises SQL Server application to the cloud can be a daunting task that consists of many complicated steps. In this webinar, we will focus on what is perhaps the MOST important step of the process – those that lead up to the actual move to the cloud.
We will dive deep into the most critical considerations for moving your data and databases into the cloud, whether you use Microsoft Azure, Amazon, or another cloud provider.
    We will cover:
    • The importance of cleansing your data before a major migration
    • Fully documenting your data sources and metadata
    • Choosing from many different tools and techniques to actually move data
    • How to test data for fidelity
    • How to maintain parallel systems during transitional phases
We'll also share demos and overviews of native features within SQL Server that enable you to move data, as well as show powerful tools from the SentryOne product set that can make data migrations painless. Join us for this informative panel discussion with some of the industry’s top experts!
