What we're about

Our group offers great trip options for keen trampers and hikers. We are here to have fun doing what we love doing and want you to have as much fun as we do. All of our organizers are current members of the Auckland Tramping Club (ATC) and have interests in a range of outdoor activities.

We are affiliated to the ATC. Our meet up is free (excluding bus or petrol costs for car pooling) - for bus trips we pay the non member rate. You're welcome to join the ATC and get their member prices on day hikes and multi-day hikes. You can find out more information about the ATC here. (http://www.aucktramping.org.nz/)

We do a variety of hikes around Auckland and further afield. With a strong tramping background we are on the longer duration day hike - so good fitness and suitable gear are needed. Our day hikes are typically in the 5 to 7 hour range, but usually also with a shorter option.

If you have a special request, do send the organizers a message and we will do our best to incorporate that in our programme.

We usually use the ATC bus, which means that we have the opportunity to do "through" hikes - ones that start and finish in different places. So more variety, much less backtracking and a real sense of having traveled somewhere special.

We are really keen that by enjoying and being confident with day hiking, you will then move onto multi day hiking with the ATC - throughout the North Island during the year on weekend trips, and throughout New Zealand for our longer summer and winter trips.

Please check our hiking gear and safety guide (http://www.meetup.com/Auckland-Hike-and-Ski/pages/Gear_and_Safety/) before joining us on your first day hike.

"Tramping" and "hiking" mean the same thing.

Hakarimata Walkway - Waikato

ATC Garage

We will be walking along the Hakarimata Range, south of Huntly. There are two options - either finishing by going down the many wooden steps to Ngaruawahia (4-5 hours), or continuing on and descending to the Hakarimata Rail Trail on Waingaro Rd (5-6 hours) Near the start we walk past a decent kauri grove, and then at various points along the way there are views out to the Waikato River and beyond. This is a through trip which at times is rough underfoot, so good fitness is required. The ATC bus will drop us off at the start of the hike, then meet us at each of the two possible end points. You MUST ensure that your footwear and other gear is clean before you start and that you use all cleaning stations along the way. And when you get home, a complete clean of your gear is required. Please check our guide (http://www.meetup.com/Auckland-Tramping/pages/Gear_and_Safety/) on what to bring and safety before coming on any hiking trip. As with all outdoor activities there is associated risk. Please be realistic about your level of fitness and advise the trip leader of any medical conditions before the trip starts. Leader: Tony Walton Ph[masked] Email [masked]. Transport: ATC Bus - $25 - please bring cash on the day.
