• AWS Meetup: Legacy to Modern Apps: Rebuilding Familiar Services with Serverless

Hi AWSome friends! Looking forward to seeing y'all next month. We will have a "Senior Technical Evangelist" from AWS come join us to share details on AWS Amplify and how you can improve your front end development. Looking at existing systems and patterns today, and reimagining them built using a serverless architecture, can be challenging. It’s important to identify how you can transition to build services around event-driven patterns and to remove state stored in monolith applications. We’ll first take a look at the advantages of building with a serverless architecture and some of the best ways to think serverlessly. Next, we’ll learn how to re-architect familiar services to take advantage of the scale and cost-efficiency built in to serverless. We’ll look at how to structure a webhook service, an audit trail service, and a document versioning service first from a legacy standpoint, and then how to translate each into working within a serverless architecture. Along the way, we’ll discover which AWS services are common in serverless architectures, and we’ll visit tools like the AWS SAM CLI and AWS SAM templates that can help with provisioning and deployment for serverless applications. Finally, don’t forget your laptop so you can code along as we dive into implementing the architecture we define and actually build a serverless webhooks service. Food and drinks will be sponsored by: Onica

  • Operational Security by Design with AWS, Alienvault, and Onica

To ensure Operational excellence, Security should be embedded into the design. Strategy for securing your key resources and code pipeline needs to be implemented while the application is being built. This will help customers meet their compliance requirements and ensure appropriate security of the environments while smoothly transitioning into Production phase. Agenda 6:15 Introduction and opening note by AWS Fatima Ahmed- Security Specialist - Technical Account Manager, AWS “Security Automation in the AWS Cloud” Abstract: How AWS customers can leverage AWS services to automate security monitoring, logging and threat detection. Automation can help reduce lead times for operational activities with ease of maintenance for the infrastructure. 6:45 Alienvault – AlienVault USM Anywhere: Building a Security SaaS In AWS In Six Months Ernest Mueller is Director of Engineering Operations at AlienVault, and organizes DevOpsDays Austin and the CloudAustin user group. Abstract: AlienVault decided to become a SaaS company, and set a very aggressive timeline to get there. And once we got there, we needed to become PCI/ISO/HIPAA/GDPR compliant. Here’s how we did it, what AWS services we used to get there, and how the sausage was made. 7:15 Onica – Company overview / Presentation 7:30 Networking
