• The Power of Lightweight Transactions

    Capital Factory

~Agenda~ 5:30 pm - Food & Social Time 6:00 pm - Presentations --The Power of Lightweight Transactions by Eric Zietlow Lightweight transactions are extremely powerful when used correctly. They not only enable you to use a highly durable distributed system in an ACID like way but they allow you to do it with ease. In this talk we will explore the application of lightweight transactions and when they should be used. Eric Zietlow is a Cloud Developer Advocate at DataStax. He has been in the field for 5 plus years. Prior to being a Developer Advocate, he was a Solution Architect with over 800 accounts. Before DataStax he worked for a systems integration startup.

  • Austin Cassandra Users - "What's New in 4.0" + "Cloud Databases & C*"

Hey, everyone! As you probably know, our friend Nick Bailey has stepped down as the organizer for the Austin C* Meetup. We are very sad to see him go and hope to continue providing an awesome space for you all to talk all things Cassandra in his stead. To introduce your new organizers- Hannah Aubry- I am a community manager for DataStax and will be helping curate speakers and get you all awesome food/ drinks from afar. I'm committed to keeping the Meetup an OSS-friendly space. Please let me know if I ever fail in that commitment. Also, please reach out if you're interested in speaking, or have a food/drink preference. :) Christine Ellis- is a software engineer for DataStax and will be your go-to person during events. She is an Austin local and is very much looking forward to meeting you all! ~Agenda~ 6:15- Food & networking 6:45- Presentations begin David Gilardi- Introduction to Apache Cassandra™ + What’s New in 4.0 Apache Cassandra™ has been making a difference for applications that scale for over 10 years! If you haven’t had a chance to get to know our favorite database, this is your chance to get the basics. In this talk, we’ll go over the fundamentals, including Cassandra’s distributed architecture, data model and what it means for your application. We’ll also cover what’s coming in 4.0 in the coming year. David Gilardi (@SonicDMG) is a Developer Advocate at DataStax who is a total nerd for distributed databases. He has over 20 years of relevant experience in programming, database administration, cloud, server/network monitoring, and analytics. Before his time at DataStax he was Senior Development Manager at Hobsons, an education services company, responsible for a flagship SaaS CRM product deployed on hybrid cloud using a combination of relational and NoSQL database technologies. Jonathan Ellis- Cloud Databases & C* If you are interested in the scalable databases that run the largest cloud applications, this talk is for you. I'll give an overview of the similarities and differences between the main cloud databases: Apache Cassandra, Amazon DynamoDB, Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB, and Google Cloud Spanner. I'll provide a comparison of expressivity, performance, and cost characteristics of these databases, including bleeding edge results from Java 11 and ZGC. As the founding project chair of Apache Cassandra, Jonathan (@spyced) built the Cassandra community into an open source success. Jonathan is Chief Technology Officer and co-founder at DataStax, where he sets the technical direction for the company.

  • Cassandra and Kubernetes

    Capital Factory

Hey everyone! For our October Meetup we'll be hearing from Adam at Instaclustr about Cassandra and Kubernetes. Hope to see everyone there! About the Talk: Kubernetes has become the most popular container orchestration and management API with cloud-native support from AWS, GCP, Azure and a growing enterprise support ecosystem. Leveraging Kubernetes to provide tested, repeatable deployment patterns that follow best practices is a win for both developers and operators. In this talk Adam Zegelin, Co-Founder of Instaclustr, will introduce the Cassandra Kubernetes Operator, a Cassandra controller that provides robust, managed Cassandra deployments on Kubernetes. By adopting Kubernetes and Cassandra, you can provide DBaaS like services rapidly and easily to the rest of your team and have a simple on-ramp to true multi-cloud capabilities to your environment. About Adam: As Instaclustr's founding software engineer, Adam provides the foundation knowledge of Instaclustr's capability and engineering environment. Adam is also focused on providing Instaclustr's contribution to the broader open source community on which our products and services rely, including Apache Cassandra, Apache Spark and other technologies such as CoreOS and Docker. Prior to founding Instaclustr, Adam worked on large-scale big data projects with Australian government agencies. Schedule: 6:30-7:00 - Pizza and drinks 7:00-8:00 - Cassandra and Kubernetes 8:00-8:30 - Q & A

  • Modeling a Graph on top of Cassandra

    Capital Factory

Hey everyone! This month we'll be hearing from Jeremy Hanna of DataStax. He'll be giving us an overview of how you would go about modeling a distributed graph on top of Cassandra. He'll also dive into the open source graph computing framework TinkerPop. I'm also happy to announce that we have a new sponsor for this month, Expero. Expero will be providing the pizza and beer this month as well as giving us a short intro into their toolkits built for developing with Cassandra. Schedule: 6:30-7:00 - Pizza and drinks 7:00-7:15 - Intro to the Expero Starter Kit 7:15-8:00 - Modeling a Graph on top of Cassandra 8:00-8:30 - Q & A Intro to the Expero Starter Kit: Give your technical team a boost with the Expero Starter Kit to jumpstart your DataStax application development effort. Decrease time to market with this cutting-edge technology toolkit. Our team created this toolkit after working extensively with DataStax tools for developing large mission critical Enterprise applications. These tools for Supply Chain Optimization, Customer 360, Fraud Detection and Prevention are designed for business and non-technical teams in the creation of rapid proof of concepts, proving new technology concepts and developing full enterprise applications.
