July Meetup: The Art of the Scientist

It’s no accident that some of the biggest breakthrough business ideas have evolved from seemingly small and often unintended discoveries.

Iterative innovation through experimentation isn't just limited to the "starting-up" stage but can be continuously applied to any organization bringing new products to market. Companies like Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Intuit all employ a culture of continuous experimentation in everything they do.

But even though we have learned a lot about the mechanics of running innovation experiments through methodologies like the Lean Startup, crafting effective experiments that lead to breakthrough insights is still considered more art than science.

In this talk I'll demystify the process for crafting effective experiments even in the face of extreme uncertainty.

Ash, thank you for an entertaining and compelling presentation. I used to joke around when my wife or others asked me "what do you do?" I'd tell them "truthfully I sit around waiting for that one moment a day when I make a meaningful decision". What really rang true was the need for a predefined model to act as both a point of reference and decision making compass combined with the insight that often the knack for focusing on a specific point at a specific time that makes all the difference.

Ash, great job of presenting. You covered a lot of ground and still were able to answer many audience questions.

How does the waitlist work - should I not come unless I know in advance people canceled, or can I come and if it doesn't seem crowded I get in?
