Volunteer at your favorite park on It's My Park Day (http://www.austinparks.org/its-my-park-day.html) - Austin Parks Foundation's annual day of service to improve parks and greenbelts throughout the city.
If you don't have a favorite, Sierra Club'ers will be pitching in at Walnut Creek Metro Park. Meet at Park Pavilion, near portable restrooms (30.402003, -97.684370). If you don't recognize our group, some of us will be wearing green "Sierra Club" buttons or have other club logos.
Please also register for the project on the APF website (http://www.austinparks.org/multi-project-list.html?eventid=754&linkid=361&action=selectproject).
(1) Restoring the mulch rings to about 70 young trees planted around the ballparks and parking lots. The city will provide the mulch, Austin Parks Foundation will supply the rakes, but feel free to bring a wheelbarrow or two which would really help. Watch this <1min. mulching video!
(2) Focusing mainly on Severe Consequences Loop, remove berries from all easily accessible Nandina. These berries are toxic to migratory birds. Removing them now will prevent some bird deaths and reduce the seed bank of this invasive plant. Easy project for kids 5-10, with their parents' help.
(3) Along Wells Branch above the Park Road, remove flood-damaged invasive plants, foreign debris, and excessive deadwood. Stack shreddable debris by path near Park Road for later removal. Rehabilitate flood-damaged native plants.
(4) Along Walnut Creek, starting upstream of the main crossing, remove flood-damaged invasive plants, foreign debris, and excessive deadwood. Stack shreddable debris along Park Road by Service Road for later removal. Rehabilitate flood-damaged native plants.
Remember to wear closed toed shoes, long pants, bring a water bottle, and dress appropriately for the weather. We will provide tools, gloves, and water.
If you would like to bring a child, please carefully consider which project you choose. Children must be with a parent at all times.
In case of rain, projects will start one hour late. If rain persists, projects will begin at their original start time on Sunday.
