There has been a schedule change due to inclement weather. If you can't go on Saturday the 10th, then perhaps the same outing on the next day would be better. I will be emailing members who were going on this event to let them know what time later I will be posting Sunday's outing on the calendar. Please check your schedule and change your RSVP if needed. Thank you.
Nico Hauwert and I are repeating this outing multiple times later because there is enough interest.
This is a tour of three different caves, all within a mile of the intersection of Slaughter and Mopac. All of these caves have been restored by removing trash and sediment by a team of volunteers led by Nico Hauwert. He will be leading us through these caves. He will provide all the necessary equipment. He has described this trip as involving "only a little crawling and mostly fairly large open caves".
There is a $10 dollar fee for accessing the cave on the grounds of Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. All of the other caves are free to access.
For more information you can read: “Austin’s Underground Frontier” and “Secrets of Goat Cave Karst Preserve”: Save Barton Creek Association Newsletter, V. 36. Issue 1. http://www.savebartoncreek.org/about-us/newsletters/
The caves are as follows: LaCrosse Cave (Wildflower Center), Live Oak Cave (1 block west of Mopac and Davis Lane.), and Grassy Cove (Slaughter and Escarpment).
Nico Hauwert is a HydroGeologist and has been studying and working with the Edwards Aquifer for 25 years. His efforts to expose these caves has not come easy and he would love to show you them and field any questions you might have.
There will be two waivers to sign when you go, one from Nico Hauwert and one from Sierra Club. Children can attend if parents sign their forms.
Be prepared to get a little dirty, so dress appropriately and make sure you wear closed-toed shoes. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call me at[masked]-6191.
There is a limited amount of gear, so Do Not RSVP unless you're certain that you will attend. RSVP's will be tracked. Persons who No-Show or cancel with less than 24 hours notice will be noted and may be removed from future events
