Join us on this fall outing to a beautiful ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Turtle Rock Ranch is an evolving laboratory of sustainability and renewable energy projects. Our four-mile hike will have three distinct elements: through a heavily wooded hillside with occasional vista views, along perennial Honey Creek with cascades and native pecan trees and finally around a system of permaculture-inspired swales. The tour will view solar systems, an eighty-foot wind turbine, a rainwater collection system, a solar pump and gravity-fed irrigation system for an organic garden, a greenhouse, an off-grid cabin and areas for a planned micro-hydro generation system and a hydrothermal heat pump.
You will need sturdy footwear (boots recommended), sun protection, hat and water bottles or reservoir. You may want to bring binoculars for viewing wildlife. Please bring your own lunch and snacks.
Participants will gather in Austin for private carpooling arrangements at 9am on Saturday, December 15th and then drive about seventy minutes to the ranch site. Estimated return time is 3:30pm. Please contact Chip Wolfe at chipwolfeSC@gmail.com for information and directions.
