Come to the Cabaret, old (and new) friends! I'm looking to find people, like me, who love the old standards (Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, etc) and who will help me create a local Cabaret scene here in Austin. I'm looking for singers, pianists, and audience. Let's find our core group, meet as a salon once a month in a home with a piano, and grow this thing! I'm a recent transplant from Chicago where there is a vibrant Cabaret community and I'd like to recreate that here in Austin! As an active member of The Chicago Cabaret Professionals I share their vision for expanding and preserving this art form. First meetings of the group will be to brainstorm how this can work, answering questions like "How do we find and fund pianists who can play all the old standards in any key needed?" "How do we decide who gets to sing - invitation, open mic, audition?" "How do we find a permanent home to support a larger group"
What is Cabaret? Simply put, it's a gathering place for singers, musicians to share songs and stories in an intimate setting (usually bistro tables or dinner theater). Whether delivered with satirical edge, comic flair or romantic charm, Cabaret is known now for its elegance, passion and humor, evoking the universality of life's experience. Don't confuse Cabaret with Burlesque (some forms of Cabaret are baudy) - that is not what we're about! Think Ella, Nina Simone, Elaine Stritch, Bobby Short, Peter Allen, Ertha Kitt, Edith Piaf and more, more more! At its best Cabaret is a love affair between performers and audience in a cozy intimate setting.
