Llano River - Dos Rios to Martins Crossing, south of Mason

We'll meet at Dos Rios, which is where RR 2389 crosses the river. We'll take one car down to the end for a shuttle back. The trip is 7 miles and takes 2 -4 hours. There's a few riffles but no real rapids. The country s beautiful! We can take some food and picnic at the sandbar half-way, and then head to Cooper's in Llano for BBQ afterwards.

A very pretty run. Good thing we had plenty of water or it would not have been as fun. Lots of spots where you would have to drag the boat in summer season.
A very nice group of people who were glad to help each other out.

This is a really nice paddle. Lots of fun :). Disappointed that I wasn't able to join the group at Cooper's after. This was my first trip with the meet-up group and I had a really good time.

to jkao: I think it is fine to bring yr dog. If anyone else objects speak up. Just be aware that the river goes through private property, and so you;ll need to have the dog under control. The flow is pretty low, 150cfs or so, but I doubt that as a group we'll be going very fast.

Just FYI...I live out in Leander so will be going out 29 through Llano if anyone lives out that way and would like to meet up or carpool. I can take a few extra people (2 more will fit)...and have a trailer I can use for kayaks if there are too many for the roof.

With great regret, I have to bow out. I have a problem that requires me to stick close to home this weekend. I hope you all have a great time. If you could, please post some pictures of the trip.

ps. you could also just follow me if we don't carpool. my boat is not far out of the way- just on the west side. take me 5 min to load up.

Ann did you get my email about carpooling? I'm clueless about using this message thing, but feel free to email me or call my cell[masked]

Ann, it WAS an Alberson's. Now it is the empty building in the crook of the Y in Oakhill, where 290 and 71 part ways. My cell is[masked]

Albertson's, Y at Oak Hill, 8 AM - I plan to be there.

I changed the startup time to 11am which seems to work much better for everybody. I like the idea of hooking up at Albertson's, I guess at 8am then. Thank you, everybody, for making this work!

Charlie, it seems that unless people leave Austin at 5:30 am they will not arrive for a 9am put-in. Was that your initial vision in organizing? I can swing the early hour, but that will certainly be the first challenge of the day :).

I think the old Albertson's lot in Oak Hill is a great choice. Time is problematic - it would take between 3 and 4 hours to get to the launch site. We have more than a week to work it out, though.

Thanks folks- now, with a better image of where it is, can I suggest that we meet at a SW location in Austin? The Y in Oak Hill- maybe in the old (now closed) Albertsons parking lot? Or the HEB parking lot? And, at what time?

I have it now; found a PDF by the Mason county offices that referred to creating a public river access. "Dos Rios" is not a town, it's where the James River joins the Llano River south of Mason - sort of SSW of Mason. It's upriver from where 1723 crosses the LLano river. I think the best bet for people from Austin is to go to Fredricksburg, and in Fredricksburg go north on US 87 toward Mason. When you get close to Mason, turn left on 1723. Then turn right on RR 2389.

I think this paddle would be fine for (reasonably adventurous) teenagers. And directions to Dos Rios are...
    In Mason, take 87 South.
Before you leave town turn right on RR 1723
Take another right on RR 2389 and follow it to the river.
Hopefully that will help you on Google Maps.

Could somebody please post actual directions how to find the launch site? I've looked all over the Net and can't find anything.

Can we set up a meeting place and time in Austin for that morning- on the way out of town? I live just east of downtown, and would be happy to meet central, or on the way out... Possibilities would be Central Market North (38th street), or Whole Foods at 183/360. ?? (that way we can also get groceries if needed)

Would this paddle be ok for my nieces (age 19 and 15) who only have a little bit of paddling experience on small lakes?

    April 1, 2010

  • Charlie L.

I am - from South Austin, but I could rendezvous.

    April 1, 2010

  • Jennifer

Anyone leaving from Austin that I could follow?

    April 1, 2010

  • Charlie L.

The road is called Simonsville Rd. It's the the next river crossing down from Dos Rios.

Hi guys - Yes, you would need your own boat to participate, or rent one.
