April 10th *South* Weeknight Discussion Meetup

Our new schedule has us meeting four times a month, twice each in North Austin and South Austin. Wednesdays will be at Write by Night. Meetings last 2.5-3 hours.

We'll start the meeting off by reading works  (silently) from those that have brought something to share then we'll take turns discussing them. If you want to bring a piece to share please bring at least 4-5 copies and keep it between 2-4 pages in length (2,000 words max). From there if time allows we will branch into a discussion of topics related to writing.

About the meeting fee, Meetup charges organizers a fee to run the group. So, the suggested donation is to help me cover the costs of running the group. Anything you can donate helps but we won't kick you out if you can't spare a few bucks.

**Special Note** for this meeting we will be at our South meetup location, WriteByNight. The WriteByNight folks have generously offered to let us use their office space for our meetings. They will have coffee & maybe a few snacks on hand but if you want something special be sure to bring it as this won't be our usual coffee shop environment. Hopefully the trade off to gain privacy & quiet will be worth it. The also have open writing hours here from 4PM-8PM so feel free to stop by early if you need a quiet place to work. For more info check out their website www.writebynight.net & meetup group http://www.meetup.com/WriteByNight-Write-better-Right-now/

Very nice to meet everybody at last week's south meetup. I'm sorry I had to leave early. Next time I'll be better prepared with my medication. I did want to provide feedback about the format. I had trouble reading through all the articles and then going back for the critique. Do you ever read one article, discuss, read the next, discuss, etc? And what about the author reading their piece out loud? This might use less time then everybody reading on their own. I think sometimes, too, a writer can learn a lot when hearing their work being read. We could still look at hard copies while listening to the reading. I was also a little surprised that we only covered two pieces in two hours. Maybe we could use a timer for both reading and discussing to help keep things on track. These are just my initial impressions. Overall, it was a great experience and I look forward to more in the future!

Kara, thanks for your input. The standard format for all meetings is to read pieces first then discuss each individually. It works best for time management. While it is true that writers can benefit from hearing their works read out loud we don't do that at our meetings. That style does not work for everyone, some folks have trouble following along if pieces are read out loud and some folks don't want to read their work out loud. I understand our format takes some getting used to but it is what works best for our group. If you forget what comments you had on a particular piece you can always go back to the stack and look for the copy you marked up. The writers will take their pieces back home at the end so they have the comments from members but anyone can refer back to them during the meeting.

Our meetings usually run about 2 hours and 45 minutes so depending on the number of pieces, I believe we only had 4 that night, we might devote more time to each piece if we have it. I don't use a timer because I gauge things by multiple factors, number of pieces, length of pieces, how quickly folks are reading but I do keep my eye on the clock so we can keep things moving along. Glad you came out and hope to see you again!
