Dynamic Worlds: Techniques for Worldbuilding (1 of 4 workshops)
Dominican Joe Cafe
Saturday July 18

For some time, I have been promising to lead a premium workshop on Worldbuilding -- the process of fleshing out the outlines and details of the world for a piece of fiction or speculative prose. I am ready to do that, now that my outlines and guides for each session are complete. These sessions are extra and apart from the standard Austin Writers meetups, and don't interfere with them.

The sessions will be limited to 10 people per workshop, and are $10 per attendee per session. Attendees are not required to sign up for all 4, and another person could also hop in and take an empty seat in a future one. But attendees will get first word as to when the next one is scheduled, so they can rsvp first.

$10 per session gives you a printed guide to the lesson for that workshop, materials for the exercises, future updates to the resources, and access to what should become a growing body of materials for the process. Each workshop will focus on a concrete technique that will make the worldbuilding process faster, more tangible, and also more flexible.

"Session 1: Dynamic Worlds" will review the 3 scales at which Worldbuilding can take place: The large-scale level of the whole world of the work; the medium-scale level of its cultures, and the small-scale level of its characters and settings. Session 1 will also introduce the Dynamic Worlds approach, and provide a core exercise that we will use in each of the other sessions to flesh out our material.

Each of the remaining 3 workshops in the series will focus on those 3 scales of worldbuilding in turn.

These techniques should be helpful not only for worldbuilding, but also for overcoming writers block and for developing new scenarios in your work.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in these workshops! I am glad to finally be able to offer them. If these are successful, and seem to fill a need, I will repeat them in the future so that people who missed one in the series can retake them.

Please Bring: A pair of scissors, and a small container (sandwich-size tupperware should work.)

Note on registration: I strongly recommend paying in advance via PayPal. I will also accept payment at the session, but cannot proceed with the workshop until all attendees are paid.
