What we're about

This is a space for setting up and organizing 'In Real Life' encounters with other parents who are raising children with neuro-behavioral disorders. In my mind, the autism spectrum ranges all the way from ADHD, SPD, NVLD, ODD, OCD, CAPD,and Social Anxiety to more typical ASD types, including profoundly impacted individuals who lack language and self-care skills.

Some people focus on the differences are between various diagnoses.....I like to focus on what we have in common. We all want the best for our children in a world that is not set up for them very well right now. We want to maximize their independence and their ability to communicate - whatever that looks like. Even if others have different experiences and situations - we can learn from each other and support each other. I want to avoid focusing on what divides us and encourage our uniting. We have much to offer each other if we approach each other with open arms and minds. We already experience isolation from the typical world enough.

I will run one event per month in my area. I used to do more, but can no longer keep it up. Three spectrum kids keeps me busy. I can continue to pay the hosting fee. I"m hoping to tap a few friends to help with some of the administration things that happen behind the scenes.

It's up to others to start holding their own events of their own choosing, on their schedule and in their areas. Hosting can be as easy or complex as you want to make it. If you want guidance or have questions on how to make it work for you - contact me and I'll be happy to share my experiences. I have 6 years of trying different things, and have a reasonable idea of who our members are, and where they live. I can save you some trial and error.

I really hope that this next version of this group becomes bigger and better than it ever was. Together we can make a strong, vibrant, supportive community for ourselves, where no one needs to hide what their home life is like for fear of making someone else uncomfortable.
