What we're about

Hello, Awesome Bostonians!

Who are we? We are a group of 20 and 30-somethings looking for new friends, new adventures, and a renewed sense of fun. Live in Boston or in the area? We'd love to meet you!

What do we do? We go on tours, go to festivals, athletic events, wine tastings, concerts, hiking, trivia nights, happy hours and more! Suggestions for fun events are always recommended!

Some events have an associated fee, which is always stated in the event description.

New to the group? We want everyone to feel welcome! If it's your first event with Young Bostonians, feel free to contact the organizer in advance or say hello upon arrival. The attendees are usually a healthy mix of newcomers and regulars. Everyone is incredibly friendly!

Requirements:

All members must have a recent, clear photo of themselves to join and stay a member of Young Bostonians. Please be sure that the picture is only of YOU!

Please RSVP for all the events you plan on attending, and update your RSVP if your attending status changes!

All members must be welcoming of all races, religions, sexual orientation etc. Any and all discriminatory comments related will not be tolerated. Please contact an organizer if you have any issues.

DISCLAIMER: During all events, everyone is responsible for themselves. The organizer, assistant organizers and event hosts are not responsible for the safety of the participants. We will try our best to prevent accidents, but are not responsible or liable if something happens to you. By being a member of the group, you fully acknowledge this.

Skip the Small Talk is designed based in psychology research to give you all the warm fuzzy feelings of human closeness, without that feeling of Zoom-fatigue afterward.

We use question prompts and a structure designed based in psychology research to help you get vulnerable with strangers in a way that actually feels safe, and that brings out the best in people.

WHAT'S IT LIKE?

The whole thing is on Zoom. We'll put you into pairs in breakout rooms, and you'll switch partners so you're not just talking to the same person the whole night. We'll also have small group conversations in breakout rooms. For every conversation of the night, we'll give you conversation prompts to choose from.

Some examples of our research-backed prompts are, "What's something you're proud of that you don't usually get to share with people?" And, "What's something I would need to know about you in order to be friends with you?"

We also give you a lot of structure so that one person is talking at a time for the first few minutes with your partner, and then we mix things up a little.

WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT IT?

Here's some stuff people have told us (unprompted!) about the online Skip the Small Talks:

"I was surprised at how good this was! I'll definitely be coming back!"

"This has turned into my weekly self-care-- going to this event every week is something kind I do for myself to stay sane."

"I'm an introvert, and to be honest, I even think of myself as someone who generally hates other people, but I actually feel energized after Skip the Small Talk online. For some reason, I feel Zoom fatigue in pretty much every other online interaction, but I'm usually, like, giddy after
these."

Ready to skip the small talk with us? Tickets are pay-what-you-want and all the money goes right back into supporting our mission to reduce social isolation. Grab a ticket from Eventbrite here: www.tinyurl.com/skipthesmalltalk

Please do your best to arrive a couple minutes before 7:00 pm if you haven't been to one of these before so you don't miss the intro, but feel free to come late if you need to-- you'll still be able to participate just fine! If you've come to an online Skip the Small Talk before and would rather skip the intro, feel free to come at 7:10 pm.

Skip the Small Talk is dedicated to providing an inclusive, welcoming environment for everyone. Check out our safety policy here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fmhxMcSsdgkQYOZQZoUKC3DK511fDl3pcPyShB22W9s

Want to keep up with our events? Like us at www.Facebook.com/SkiptheSmallTalk! If you want to be the first to get access to tickets, and free exclusive content about human connection, communication, boundaries, and more, you can join our mailing list at tinyurl.com/ststlist (don't worry, we hate mailing lists, too-- we only e-mail when we have something useful to tell you about, like new events).

FYI that Meetup might say that "you're going" if you RSVP as "going," but you'll need to sign up via Eventbrite to receive the Zoom URL. Hope to have you there!

We've gotten a lot of feedback that y'all want a space to meet other women and nonbinary buds, so we're doing a speed-friending event in the Greater Boston area just for that!

This event is trans-inclusive and we welcome all women and non-binary folks who live in the Greater Boston area. While all ages are welcome, this event especially centers those in their 20's-30's.

According to our surveys, a lot of our guests report feeling nervous about coming, but 100% of the people who say they were nervous also end up saying they were glad they came. There might be some selection bias going on, but we still think it's promising :)
