Hi AXENites,

80% of success is just showing up, the other 20% is luck, talent, skill or timing.

It doesn't matter if it's learning how to juggle (I'm still struggling and would love some pointers) or winning the lottery -- if you don't show up and play, be it juggling balls, lotto tickets or anything else in life, you will not succeed.

In April at AXEN we do the 30 day challenge goal where we do something everyday for 30 days. Don't worry we do it again in September if you missed April's monthly goal.

My April goal has been to journal everyday for 30 days, it is a simple journaling exercise that I created to work on what matters most to me at the moment in terms of my personal development -- my integrity.

I want to be impeccable with my word. I want to be intentional with my time and attention -- it falls in line with my intention for the year to learn how to prioritize my time and energy to best affect the things I care about and use my most valuable asset, my time, wisely.

I created a format for getting myself to focus and I've been doing it everyday for the last 28 (soon to be 30) days.

Why should you care what I did this month?
What does that have to do with you?

Ask yourself this question, "What habit in your life would totally transform how you show up for yourself and care for the things you care about." Maybe it's exercise related, or financially related, or like me it's more about certain values or principles you want to embody.

After answering this question for yourself, take a moment to reflect, if you could continue to show up in this way in your life, would you be already 80% successful?

I thought long and hard to the answer this question and here's what I came up with -- if I can just consistently do all the things I say I'm going to do when I say I'm going to do them, my life will be transformed completely.

So as part of my 30 day challenge I came up with a strategy creating two short journal entries a day, one in the morning and one in the evenings, that would help me stay on task. Because if I visualize my day in the morning and reflect on my day again in the evenings my hypothesis is I'd be more intentional and learn something about my behaviors that either help or detract from my self-efficacy and be able to adjust and enhance my behaviors to that end.

If you're interested in reading the journal entry format and the journal entries I've done for the last 28 days, I'm copying them below. I've gotten a lot out of this exercise of journaling day and night, it's one of the best experiments I've done in AXEN.

I'm still not fully impeccable with my word, but I'm closer now than ever before because of the way I've been present in my day to day because of this 30 day challenge

30 Day Challenge Instructions (I call it GILO Journaling)
Journal twice a day -- Morning after waking up and at night before bed.

Morning Instructions:
(Write the time of the Journal Entry)
1. Morning Gratitude
2. Intention for the next day/for living life
3. Review your task list
4. Find the ONE THING, that when you do that it’ll snowball effect and your day will be great. Pick ONE. (Get out of bed as soon as the alarm rings, drink water first thing when you wake up, make it SIMPLE — something you can succeed at easily. Go to the gym at 7:30am is complex and has too many steps. Something like, wake up and do 5 minutes of stretches, build up to more complex tasks, don't start there.)

2. How did you do with your intention (add a number from 1-10) be honest with yourself. What can you experiment with to do differently tomorrow to give it another shot? It worked? What exactly worked?
3. Review the tasks you did do and didn’t do.
4. Did you do your ONE THING (yes/no) If to the answer is no make it simpler i.e.: if it was get out of bed immediately when the alarm goes off and do 5 minutes of stretching. Change it to 1 minute or change it to no stretching and just getting out of bed with no snooze. Keep changing until you can succeed consistently for 30 days.

I want to do what I say. I get stuff done but I am not mindful of my time and energy. It’s a lot of wasted effort and starting and stopping. I want to build even deeper consistency. I’m consistent but not as consistent as I’d like to be. Being impeccable with my word is it.



My To-do list is 20 items deep. I could do all of them today if I focus. Some of the items on the list have been on there for more than a month. I would feel amazing when I finish. I want to organize them in order of the best functioning way to get them all done. I’ll do that after the gym (I’m at the gym already ����)

Gratitude: I’m grateful for oxygen and my breath, it has never failed me as there is always available air to breathe.

Some of the items on my list that I crossed off had been there for months. The only reason it’s not a 10/10 is because I wasn’t consistent with my word 100% and I arrived late to a few meetings.

Gratitude: My business partner offered me an opportunity that is spectacular. I have to ask for what I am worth — it’s both a gift and a challenge.


Intention: stay mindful of my purpose and be impeccable with my word. Complete to do list (I’ve done 14/22 items, I did 14 things yesterday!)


Review Task List. (Only for Faith) I am already a responsible person who gets things done. I’m so proud of the man that I’ve become, I love being able to rely on myself and seeing that others can rely on me too. That I say I’m going to do X and that I do X. That’s such an accomplishment. I want to have that be the case with difficult things like bodybuilding and business, but it starts with the small things. Big things have small beginnings.


One Thing. Gym in the AM.


Evening late bedtime 2:33AM

Had dinner at my moms and decided to come home instead of sleep over.

Gratitude: My moms home cooking.
Intention: 4/10 rating. Be impeccable with my word . I did okay today but could be much better, I have a ways to go to stay diligent. Removing the distractions is key.
Chipped away but didn’t cross anything off today.
One thing. Gym (yes). Review my list and cross off most important (no).
