Bruges - Belgian beer, chocolate, great food and fine architecture!

  • Oct 12, 2012 · 10:00 AM

Much of this small city is like a living museum. A perfect city escape!

There is really so much to do that we will barely scratch the surface in just 3 days but we can certainly try to pack in as much as possible.

Bruges has often been called the Venice of the North and is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe!

In the year 2000 UNESCO rightly included the entire historical city center on the World Heritage list. Wandering along the maze of winding cobbled alleys and romantic canals, you can easily imagine yourself to be back in medieval Europe.

Bruges also offers gastronomic delights, contemporary culture, the world's best beers and several museums. This is a great, budget weekend away for those who enjoy the good things in life!

Below I have put forward just a few ideas for the trip. Obviously everyone is free to do their own thing but I suggest the following for those who would like to join me:

Friday 12 October

Arrive in the afternoon and head out to explore the city. We can settle into the hostel and maybe grab a quick bite to eat before wandering through the medieval city center with its cobbled lanes and canals.

The nearby Markt Burg area has been the hub of city life for hundreds of years and is the perfect place to enjoy evenings drinks and find local cuisine for a marvelous dining experience.

Night owls can stay out in the bars as late as they like but remember there is plenty to do the next day!

Saturday 13 October

9:00 After breakfast we can head out to see the city highlights.

Our time in Bruges is quite short so we can do a whistle-stop walking tour of the highlights. We will hit the cobbles and meander from Markt to Burg and then onto Jan van Eyckplein medieval buildings, Groenerei Canal, Tanner's Square, Dijver, Mariastraat, Walplein, Beguinage, St Saviour's Cathedral, and 't Zand square. So much to do and so little time.

Obviously at some point during this packed day we will stop for a nice lunch. In the evening it might be lovely to stroll along the canals before finding the perfect spot for dinner. The bars will be open till late again!

Sunday 10 June

9:00 After breakfast we could explore the Merchants Quarter and Fish market before visiting Astrid Park.

14:30 Back to our bus for our journey home. We can keep wandering and exploring but after lunch we need to make sure we are gathered together. There will be plenty of luggage space for beer, wine, cheese and chocolates!

The end of a really fun weekend of exploration!

A brilliant trip with such lovely people! Bruges is definitely worth a visit for its cobbled streets, narrow lanes, canals and beautiful Flemish houses. The mussels, Belgian beers and chocolates were very enjoyable too!
