Backabush is returning to the Tatras mountains for an amazing mountain adventure - winter hiking in Slovakia's oldest national park! :D
Join our local guide Martin, to enjoy the winter silence (only the squeaking snow under your feet) and the icy, mountain landscapes. You will explore the snowy High Tatras and the neighboring mountains with snowshoes or crampons. These mountains are in fact the smallest mountain range in the world with an alpine character. Although not as huge as the Alps, the High Tatras has a lot to offer. There are 11 peaks higher than 2500m with deep valleys, thundering waterfalls and streams. Of course we might not hear the waterfalls in the winter if they are frozen cascades of hard ice!
Martin would like to take the group on hikes using snowshoes but this does depend on the depth and type of snow. Generally the snowfall is sufficient for snowshoeing but this is beyond anyone's control. Fantastic hikes are possible with crampons as an alternative .
Safety is always our priority so we will avoid snowshoeing and hiking in avalanche prone areas and on closed trails. In winter it is only permitted to snowshoe to the mountain huts, but not further, due to the seasonal closure of hiking trails. Winter hiking is more demanding so this will be enough of an achievement.
You do not need your own equipment (snowshoes/crampons will be provided) or any previous snowshoeing experience. Depending on the snow conditions we will snowshoe to two mountain huts in the High Tatras and hike to the traditional Slovak village of Ždiar and maybe also visit the Low Tatras.
Our hikes will be up to 15 km long with climbs up to 800 meters so you do need to be reasonably fit. Snowshoeing is definitely not like going for a Sunday walk in the park!
The accommodation will be provided in spacious and fully equipped, holiday apartments. WILI TATRY hotel apartments is situated in the village Tatranska Lomnica, at the foot of the second highest peak of Slovakia – Lomnicky Peak.
Half-board is included in the trip package. Hearty and delicious Slovakian cuisine will be provided by the excellent restaurant adjacent to our accommodation.
