Backabush is going back to Scotland to visit LOCH TAY & THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS!
The Highlands of Scotland are a hikers delight with some of the highest mountains in Britain and incredible scenery. This is truly a region of exceptional beauty and it is full of alluring challenges. Many spectacular ridges and peaks beckon while a wonderful array of glens, lochs and forest await exploration. Loch Tay itself is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles long and over 500 ft deep. It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range.
Scotland doesn't get better than this!
Our plan is to fly into Glasgow and then drive to our fabulous accommodation set back from the banks of Loch Tay, within 50 acres of its own grounds. We will stay just a gentle stroll from the loch waters and our privately rented house is full of charm with a lovely central courtyard, large lawn, as well as woods and streams - there's even a waterfall.
We will enjoy a 4-night stay at a historic former laird's house booked for our exclusive use. Classic walks in the region include:
Ben Lawers - Perthshire's highest mountain (1214m)
The Tarmachan Ridge
Ben Vorlich - a fine 985m summit near Loch Earn
This trip allows us to explore a truly superb slice of Scotland and the protected landscape is abundant in flora and fauna including an extraordinary array of Arctic alpine plants that thrive here.
It is especially good that we have managed to arrange our visit for June, at the absolute best time of year for wildflowers and when the days are wonderfully long. Any earlier and the high summits could still be dangerously clad in snow, while any later and we will be bothered by midges (tiny biting flies) which can hatch out and swarm in the summer.
The mountain hiking in this area involves long and challenging ascents (sometimes steep) and at times some scrambling. This trip is strenuous and we hope to hike some rugged mountain terrain so a good level of fitness will be necessary.
