Details

Where: Castle Peak/Basin Peak off of Hwy 80 by Donner Summit

WHAT: Moderate/Strenuous hike. Estimated distance: 10 miles , Elevation Low/High: 7250/9103ft Castle/9015ft Basin. Start the hike by following the dirt road. In a mile and half the trail will start to climb and you'll reach a junction at Castle Pass. The PCT crosses this junction. Turn right and follow the ridgeline up to Castle Peak. From the ridgeline you look to your left (north) and see a beautiful green valley and ahead and to the right you can see your destination. Simply follow the well defined trail to the top. The climb gets quite steep (1300' gain, mostly in the last 2 miles) and I recommend hiking poles if you have them. A clear day offers awesome views of sierra peaks. We will have lunch on the peak. (if you want a shorter version of this hike this is a good turn around) After lunch we will hike down the peak then over to Basin Peak and down to the Peter Grubb Hut.

WHO: This hike is for those who are in great physical hiking condition and able to hike from 7250/9103ft Castle/9015ft Basin. Please hike regularly or do other strenuous activity such as mountain biking/running, etc. Please be able to hike a flat trail at an average 20 minute mile.

WHEN: We will meet at 7:30am depart at 7:40am- Sunsplash Park N Ride, 1813 Taylor RD, Roseville, CA

DIRECTIONS to trailhead :1 hour and 15 minute drive. From Sunsplash Park N Ride drive east I-80 to the 176 Borsal Ski exit. This is the first exit after Soda Springs. Turn left under the freeway. The trail head is on the north side of I-80. Drive northeast up a paved road, and park anyway on the side, we will meet at the gate.

CARPOOL: Due to liability issues, BAS cannot organize or provide carpooling.
