Santa Cruz Island Sea Kayaking

This is a 5-star trip!

We'll spend 3 days and 2 nights camping at Scorpion Landing campground on Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands NP. While adventurous and not for the feint of heart, this is a world-class trip!

This is a quasi-car camping trip but you'll have to carry your gear about a half-mile. You can bring a small ice chest, camp chair, and some other luxuries. The beautiful island is a wilderness area but the campground has water and good bathrooms. Average high temperatures are in the high 60's.

We will head over Thursday to Ventura, CA and will stay at Lucky's friend's home that night.

Early Friday morning, the ferry will carry us and our gear 20 miles off the mainland to Santa Cruz Island. We will spend the weekend relaxing, kayaking, spelunking (going in caves via kayak), and hiking. The island is famous for its adventurous sea caves that can only be viewed by kayak. While no kayaking experience is necessary, you need to be comfortable in sometimes rough open water.

The island also has several fun hiking trails with fantastic ocean views. We'll see dolphins and hopefully whales on the boat ride over. We'll also spot sea lions (seals) while kayaking.  We'll get home very late Sunday evening

Cost is $170/person which includes the ferry ride, kayak rentals, camping fees, kayak transport, and PayPal fee. Lucky, the hike leader is very experienced and has been to SCI over 10 times.

Carpools will be set-up as needed.  Check your schedule carefully before signing up as there are no refunds if you cancel for any reason, even if someone takes your place.

Hello everyone. I ended up with 2 items looking for their owner, so let me know if they are yours. One is a grey seat pad/pillow, and the other is a Channel Islands official map.

To Kym, I do apologize for not expressing specific gratitude (Lucky, you know I am truly grateful, since I did say so in person). I had meant to include both of you in my comments but apparently had a moment of ADD. I know both of you put a good bit of effort into orchestrating, and Kym you did a wonderful job leading us around and keeping us safe. Thanks also to Jason for contributing with those goals, and to Jessica for long drives and doing your best to make sure we were comfortable. I am also grateful to those of you who provided so many delicious snacks, including Brenda for your timely peanut butter sandwiches! If I am missing anyone for a significant contribution, please let me know!

Jessica: I appreciate your saying "thank you." With 20+ hours of planning and $1,000+ of upfront out-of-pocket cash that Kym and I put in to coordinate this trip, I'm dismayed that half the folks that went haven't said a word or just threw out a generic "thanks to all."

Lucky and Kym...Jason and I are very thankful that we were able to be part of the fabulous trip. It is something I never even knew you could do and to have all the 'hard' work done is very appreciated. I'm so glad Lucky talked us into it at the April meeting.

Thank you all for a truly fabulous weekend!

Lucky and Kym, please let me/us know if you get anywhere with the helmets, and whether my pictures of them might help. I don't think I can just let this one slide. :(

I thought about that Saturday night and was going to mention it on the ferry...then forgot all about it after my morning!

I am going to chime in to also say it was a fabulous trip! Kym was a fantastic guide! Plus I can't figure out how he did it but totally thrilled that Lucky arranged both dolphins and a whale sighting for us on our ferry ride back! Lol

I'd say this is a 5 star trip :) Adventurous sea caves is an understatement! As advertised, we did see dolphins and a whale on the boat...and sea lions while kayaking. It was a great trip...Ibuprofen is my friend today...and Jason & I are very glad to spend the 4th of July with all of you! Hope to do more in the future!

    Lucky, Brenda & Karen:
I now have Thursday off so let me know if you can or want to leave a little earlier than 3pm.
I live in the Arcadia area. We can meet in the Safeway parking lot off of 48th Street and Indian School Road.

Brenda- how early would you be willing to meet? If we leave between 9-10am then we can have a relaxing evening in Ventura and we could set up camp before dark.

Hi all. I'm looking forward to this trip for the 3rd year in a row. Does anybody have room for me to carpool with them, as well as let me put an 8ft kayak on their roof???? A roof rack is not necessary, as I have foam blocks that work just fine. Last year we put one of my 16ft kayaks on a passenger car with no issues. I'm trying to avoid bringing my 12 mpg SUV. I am willing to pitch in more than my share of the gas for the help with this.
