Title: Built-in not bolted-on privacy and data protection in engineering and technology projects
Presenter: Sara Wilford, Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility, De Montfort University
Privacy by design is a concept originally proposed by Ann Cavoukian, the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, Canada. Its objective is to be proactive rather than reactive, and preventative rather than remedial. The development of new technologies should therefore consider building privacy protections into design and development from the outset. Built in, rather than bolted on approaches can provide end-to-end lifecycle protection, increase visibility and transparency and respect for user privacy and data protection in the development, design and implementation of new technologies.
