What we're about
What is Samba?
Samba is the music and dance of Brazilian Carnaval; this can amount to up to four hundred drummers and several thousand dancers; Samba is the music of the African slaves transported to Latin America and has strong links to Western African drumming forms.
What is Carnaval?
Carnaval in Brazil came from the medieval Christian revels in Europe held just prior to the forty days before Lent. This annual festival was further enriched in Brazil by African rhythms, especially the Samba.
What is our Goal?
Our goal is facilitating Samba percussion workshops and an ongoing class, teaching students from complete beginners to more experienced musicians. Part of the curriculum is participating in parades performing Samba for Carnaval (Mardi Gras) or various other venues.
Who should join?
With a positive attitude and dedication, students should expect to be educated in many instruments of samba music such as the tamborim, cuica, and surdo. Pronunciation of the Portuguese language will be taught and students will be encouraged to learn melodies and lyrics and to sing…loudly! Instruments will be provided and students may choose to purchase or bring their own instruments as well. View our blog at http://bfasamba.wordpress.com/.
