- Whale Watching In A Kayak !! - Redondo Beach
Let's go Whale Watching in a kayak at Redondo Beach! This is a paid event, with REI, and is offered and organized fully by them. Just posting it in case you want to join. I have been in the past and it is fun and fantastic adventure (and I did see a whale - although farther away than the posted photo). While you are not guaranteed to see a whale, there is a good possibility, and you also may see dolphins, sea lions and sea birds. Details: Here's the Link with REI to sign up (and there are very limited spots - when you click on the link it will show how many spots are left): https://www.rei.com/event/socal-whale-watching-kayak-tour/redondo-beach/230774 Date / Time: Saturday March 16, 9:00am - 12:00pm. (Please note that there are multiple dates available, so to join us, please pick March 16 date). Place: Redondo Beach Marina (REI will provide details via email once you sign up). Cost: $119 Non-Members of REI; $99 Members of REI. RSVP: Please register / pay for your event on the REI site above, and then come back here and RSVP yes. Kayaks: When you register, if you don't have your own kayak, you can check the appropriate box when registering and REI will provide one. Cancellation / Waivers / Equipment / any and all questions -- For this event, refer directly to the REI information / link / emails that they will provide, or call them directly. They also normally send out an email a few days before the event with much more detail about how to find them at the Marina and a contact cell number, etc. If you have already contacted REI with your questions, and you still have something to ask me, you can click on my name: Marsha J. and you'll see a little icon to private message me. Please don't post questions on the discussion board if you have not yet called REI with your questions first. PS this is not an event just for our Meetup, so there will be other non Meetup members attending the event. Look forward to seeing you there BIG LIFE Adventurers! Marsha
- Lake Balboa Walk & Swan Boat Adventure
Let's check out Lake Balboa for a walk around the lake, followed by a spin in the lake on a Swan boat. Because why go to the gym to ride an exercise bike when you can pedal a Swan instead, right? (and if you're not into the Swan boat idea, you could always do some additional walking, running or biking in the area on your own after the Meetup. It's a nice, low-key place to enjoy a bit of nature. Lake Balboa is located in Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley. Details: Location: Let's meet at the picnic table in front of the swan boat rental place: (Wheel Fun Rentals; 6300 Balboa Blvd. Van Nuys, CA 91316 - this is located within Lake Balboa's Bielenson Park - Keep driving in until you find the place where all the Swan boats are parked at the pier. ). Free parking. Give yourself 15 mins to find parking, just in case crowded, but you will be able to park for sure, perhaps in an adjacent lot). How to find Marsha, your Organizer: I will wear a RED baseball hat, and I will have a Meetup sign. Also I will message all who RSVP "yes" with my contact info. the day before (so please allow notifications for this Meetup event if you want to get that info.) The Event: Fitness walk around Lake Balboa -- around 2 miles -- we'll do 1 loop (30 mins), followed by swan boat rental (1 hour), and if anyone wants to walk a second loop, then we can (30 mins). What to Bring: A bottle or two of water, $11 for the swan boat rental (you probably need a credit card / drivers license to rent -- just a guess) -- and we can fit 2/boat so perhaps bring $5.50 cash also in case you split with someone. You may want to bring a portable snack too since this will be around lunchtime and something that allows you to track your time on the boat, with the caution that you will be on a lake and there is a rather remote, but always possible chance that it could get wet). Note: the boat rental place also rents bikes. If you have questions, you can visit their site: www.wheelfunrentals.com What else? Sorry no kids for this event, but you can check it out for them for another time. Look forward to seeing you, Adventurers! If you have questions before the event, you can click on my name, Marsha J. and you'll see a little icon to message me.
- "Abandoned Zoo" Adventure + Hike - LA - Griffith Park
Let's Visit and Hike the "Abandoned Zoo" trail in Griffith Park! Come hike with new friends. -The "Abandoned Zoo" includes some interesting structures from the original Los Angeles zoo in Griffith Park. We'll stop for a few minutes at the abandoned structures. -We'll do about 3 miles total) up on wide dirt paths - there is an incline going up, but we will do a very easy pace. So fit beginners will be fine. There's nothing tricky or difficult. - We'll do a relatively easy, slower pace, and will do an "up and back" the same way that we came, rather than a full loop to keep it manageable for newer hikers (and for slowpokes like me). (If you want to go on ahead at a faster pace, without the group or with other faster hikers, feel free of course. I'll ask at the beginning of the hike, so that you can identify other similar level hikers to continue with if you'd like). Details: *Location: It's close to: 4668 Crystal Springs Drive Los Angeles, CA 90027 From here, follow the signs to park in the Merry Go Round Parking lot. This is in Griffith Park -- which is quite large and can be a bit confusing, so give yourself a little extra time. *Time: 10:00am: Meet in front of the actual Merry Go 'Round in Griffith Park - look for me on the side, by a picnic table. We will begin our hike at 10:15am. *If you just want to visit the abandoned zoo, and not do the full hike, that's fine too. If so, you can do this in 1 hour or even less and if so, there's not much hiking involved. *Bring: Water!!! You'll definitely need it. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and you'll probably want sunscreen, and maybe a snack if you need it. *Note: No bathrooms along the way, but there are bathrooms in front of the Merry Go 'Round at our meeting point. ******How to find me / our group: I (Marsha) will wear a red baseball hat for when we meet in front of the Merry Go 'Round. - Since Griffith Park is so large, the easiest way to find us is to use your Google Maps to park in the Merry Go'Round parking lot of Griffith Park, and then walk down the path to the Merry Go Round. -By the way, this is NOT the current "zoo" which is also in Griffith Park. If you go to the current zoo you'll be going to the wrong place. *If you're late, it's hard to wait for stragglers, so please allow yourself extra time to find it and to park and meet our group. *As a reminder by participating in this hike, you agree to take 100% responsibility for yourself. *I'll message those of you who RSVP "yes" a day or two before the hike with more info; so please consider to allow those notifications from me in your group settings. If your plans change, please do change your RSVP to "No". Excited to see you there, adventurers, for this fun abandoned zoo visit and hike! Marsha J.

We'll gather there until 5:45pm and then we will go find a good viewing spot on the harbor. *Fireworks start 6:00pm / boat parade 6pm - 8pm. Here's a link to the official boat parade site, but NOTE: we will be meeting at Fisherman's Village, NOT at Burton Chace park. https://mdrboatparade.org/ There is parking at the Fisherman's Village, but you will have to come earlier than 5:30 if you want a parking spot. Otherwise additional parking details are in the parade link above. Please RSVP if you can make it, and I will be messaging attendees the day before the event with more information and how to find me.
