Let's climb some hills around Walnut and San Dimas

Ride Level : Strong C+ and above riders

When : Saturday

Time : 8:00 am

Mileage : about 40 miles

Elevation : 2350 feet

Description : Let’s climb some hills around Walnut and San Dimas. This is a nice scenic ride and good for your legs to tolerate.

Climb # 1: North Grand Ave

Climb # 2: Via Verde Street

Climb # 3: Via Verde Ave

Climb # 4: San Dimas Ave

Climb # 5: East Cannon Ave

Climb # 6: San Dimas Canyon Road (return point)

Climb # 7: Bonelli Park

Climb # 8: South Grand Ave

We will meet at the parking lot adjacent to “In-and-Out” burger located between Valley Blvd and Grand Avenue in Walnut. There is about a mile before we start climbing our first small hill.

Make sure your brakes work efficiently before the ride, since there will be some steep declines. We will regroup after each climb or as needed to make sure all riders stay in the group.

This ride probably will take about 3+ hours to complete. Please remember hydration, nutrition, and flat tire repair kits.

Important Reminders:

Carrying “Personal Emergency Contact Information” is very important and a must on all BOBIE rides! If you do not have a “Road ID”, please be sure to bring and carry on you “In Case of Emergency Info” in order to allow others to help you if you are unable to help yourself.

Helmets are mandatory on all BOBIE rides. Please bring hydration, spare tube, nutrition, and appropriate clothing to be comfortable during the entire ride. (The weather can and sometimes does change during the ride)

Fog, drizzle, mist, and/or rain cancels the ride.

Excellent route Mike, this is quite possibly the hardest thing I've done on The Beast! What a blast. Great mix of hills and downhills. That Grand is butt kicker on the return leg but what a feeling of accomplishment. When someone asks how hard this is, you can now say not too bad, a guy did it on beach cruiser! I'll try to join you again sometime.

Thanks Mike for posting this ride. Wow what a great day for a ride with friends. Everyone enjoy Super Bowl Sunday. Also, I posted a video of our ride on Facebook.

Mike, I don't know the area, do you have a map of the ride? Curious what the ride/hill profile looks like. 2400ft is not too bad, but curious how steep they are. Thanks.

Brent, the hardest hills are climb #2, #6 and #8. In my opinion: For anybody to use a beach hybrid to climb on those 3 hills would be very hard.

Indeed, that's the point, a challenge! I'm planning to put a slightly larger cog on the rear to help. I've done Turnball Canyon and PCH side of Newport Coast, are you familiar with these to offer a comparison? Avg. of 6% as Rudy noted is not bad, but it'll depend on the steeper sections. Climb 2 might be my biggest concern as Climb 6 is out and back so I could turn around if necessary. Climb 8, well it's at the end so if I had to walk it, not a big deal, just meet you at the end!
