BROOKLYN Smutty Book Club - Fear of Flying by Erica Jong

Thank you to everyone who came to December's Brooklyn Smutty Book Club. I know people are worried about Omicron. We are a hybrid book club. We will once again be in-person and on Zoom. So come down to Paddy's of Park Slope or log-in with the below Zoom credentials.

For January we will continue to read through the list of sexy books referenced in a book Audra read. Next up is Fear of Flying by Erica Jong. Unlike last month, this one is available on audio, digital or paperback.

Here's what the publisher says:
. Bored with her marriage, a psychoanalyst’s wife embarks on a wild, life-changing affair.
. After five years, Isadora Wing has come to a crossroads in her marriage: Should she and her husband stay together or get divorced? Accompanying her husband to an analysts’ conference in Vienna, she ditches him and strikes out on her own, crisscrossing Europe in search of a man who can inspire uninhibited passion. But, as she comes to learn, liberation and happiness are not necessarily the same thing.
. A literary sensation when first published in 1973, Fear of Flying established Erica Jong as one of her generation’s foremost voices on sex and feminism. Nearly four decades later, the novel has lost none of its insight, verve, or jaw-dropping wit.

Here's what random GoodReads reviewers say:
. Samadrita rated it did not like: I swear if I have to take another page of this rich, uppity bitch's incessant whinings and first world problems, I'll rip all my hair out.
. da AL rated it amazing: Eons ago, I'd heard this book consisted wholely of sex & zipless f---ks. Surprise! Jong writes insightfully about the between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place that women resided in during the early 1970s, and at times still do. The protagonist isn't what I consider terribly likable, yet her bold intelligence, self-awareness, and wit carry her through myriad messy bits.
. Megan Scaison rated it amazing: I remember that when I called my grandmother to tell her that I was going to be in the vagina monologues, I expected her to react to the name: I expected her to be unaware of Eve Ensler and what V-Day is about. She simply said, "You should read Fear of Flying- it's like the first vagina monologue."
. Samadrita rated it did not like: 20 million copies sold? A seminal feminist classic? I am nothing short of incredulous. I'd say it was the pseudo-intellectual self-absorbed ramblings of a spoilt 29-year-old 'poet' that does not stand the test of time.

The reviews are all over the place. So I hope that means we'll have some great conversations!

I think we are out of books from Audra's reference list, so please come with your suggestions! I think Lady Chatterley's Lover and Story of O are still on the list, so we can always vote to re-read those.

Please note: Paddy's of Park Slope serves plenty of drinks, but does not really serve food. They welcome people to bring in food, or order in.

I know people are worried about Omicron. So please remember we are a hybrid book club. We broadcast a live Zoom from Paddy's. So come in person if you are vaccinated and comfortable, or log-in to Zoom if you are unvaccinated or laying low. See you live or online at Brooklyn Smutty Book Club!
