“The Straight Story,” directed by David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Twin Peaks), is a touching film based on the real-life journey of Alvin Straight, a cantankerous 73-year old WWII veteran living in Laurens, Iowa. His brother Lyle, living states away in Wisconsin, suffers a stroke—the brothers have not spoken in ten years. Alvin is poor and sick, but hooks up a trailer loaded with canned food and supplies to his lawnmower and starts out on a 300+ mile odyssey, against doctor’s orders. No cell phone or contacts with anyone who can afford to help him, despite uncertain weather hazards, mechanical problems, and tremendous pain, Alvin sets out…

THE STRAIGHT STORY is a masterpiece of healing by David Lynch. Alvin's journey to his brother is spiritual, and a journey into his past. He remembers when he and brother Lyle were young and filled with wonder. He tells a stranger, “I want to sit with him and look up at the stars, like we used to, so long ago.” Life has been a forge for Alvin, and his metal emerges purified through many hammerings. Will he reach his brother? If he does, who will he find? Who will this dying brother be, and what will he say? Will doors be opened or closed?
