Molecular Biotechnology Boot Camp is the foundational course for all of the BUGSS synthetic biology courses including Putting Engineering into Biology (May), Build-a-Gene (Aug) and Building Biological Systems with Biobrick Parts (Sept).
Molecular Biotechnology Boot Camp focuses on the knowledge base and laboratory skills necessary to carry out a project in synthetic biology. You’ll be introduced to software useful in the design and planning of molecular biotechnology experiments, databases, workflow strategies, and last but not least the laboratory equipment and operations necessary to conduct a molecular biotechnology experiment. The course is project based so you will use the techniques discussed in class in order to purify genomic DNA, isolate a specific gene from that genomic DNA, clone that gene, and make the protein that gene encodes. A workbook with relevant experimental protocols as well as background reading material will round out the course and provide participants with a solid foundation for additional courses in the BUGSS Molecular and Synthetic Biology series. Because of the intensive nature of the course registration is limited. Additional open laboratory hours are also provided to enable participants to finish experiments begun during class time.
The course will take place between 9am to 1pm over the course of 5 days. The days are March 14, 21, 28, April 4, and 11 (all on Saturday). Please be prepared to attend all five days. Costs (not including online processing fees) are $325 for early registration, $375 during the week preceding the event.
If you are an official member of BUGSS, costs are $75 for early registration, and $90 during the week preceding the event (Sorry this deal does not include members of the BUGSS Baltimore Meet-up group)
