• SOLD OUT: APRIL 12 - 14 - DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK

    Chiswick

    £195.00

APRIL 12 - 14 - DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK Quality bunkhouse accommodation right in the heart of beautiful Dartmoor national park! Number of beds - 12. Number of nights - 2. Cost - £195 (includes transport). Places are very limited and early booking is advisable! This fantastic hiking weekend will be based in Princetown, the heart of the Dartmoor National Park. Princetown is a fascinating town dominated by the infamous prison, featured in The Hound of the Baskervilles. It has direct walking access onto the moor and is within driving distance of all other major moorlands walks. Dartmoor is a unique environment, with large stretches of open moorland and impressive granite tors, probably the only place in Southern Britain where you can experience a feeling of true wilderness. It also has beautiful lush river valleys and small areas of ancient temperate rainforest, as well as a fascinating history typified by the huge Victorian prison overshadowing Princetown and significant industrial archaeology all over the moor. This is a small group trip and is suitable for all walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. Perfect for those wishing to go beyond everyday lowland walks without tackling high mountain terrain. We'll spend two days walking, returning home Sunday afternoon. We’re staying in 4 people dorms next to a lovely pub, right in the centre of the Moor! HIKES: Saturday - Moorland March A beautiful 15km hike over open moorland to the North of Two Bridges. This is a demanding day-long wilderness walk climbing over major Moorland Tors, each in excess of 500m above sea level. The Tors are granite outcrops revealed by time after ancient intrusive volcanic activity. We will skirt around the Live Firing Ranges of Dartmoor, see remnants of the old industrial past of this area and visit a stunted Oak Woodland (think giant bonsai), now under siege by the fierce Dartmoor climate, which once covered the entire moor. Sunday - Riverside Scramble An 8km walk along the wooded and challenging sides of the East Dart River from Dartmeet. This beautiful route shows off the wonderful upper reaches of the Dart. We’ll push our way through dense foliage hugging the crystal clear river and make river crossings using local clapper bridges or purpose made stepping stones, eventually ending up high on the moor with great views back over the river. Progress will be hard and slow but it’s so worth it to see this facet of the moor at it’s very best. We will be back at the minibus by 3 pm latest for the journey home. Price includes: 2 nights comfortable bunkhouse accommodation. Breakfasts. All transportation (From London to Dartmoor and within Dartmoor). Guided hikes. Our leaders are Mountain Leader (http://www.mountain-training.org/walking/skills-and-awards/mountain-leader) (MLTE) trained and qualified first aiders. Financial protection in accordance with the Package Travel Law 1992. Price does NOT include: Dinner and packed lunches. There is an excellent pub nearby and local shops to buy supplies. • TRAIL RUNNING HOLIDAY - West Highland Way (97 miles)

Join me for this incredible adventure as we run through the winding trails and steep mountain paths of the West Highland Way in FOUR days! SUMMARY: The West Highland Way is an iconic trail in Scotland, spanning a distance of 97 miles with 4000m of elevation gain, from Milngavie to Fort William. Some highlights of the route include amazing views of Loch Lomond, a tour of stunning scenery in Glencoe (including the many angles of Buachaille Etive Mòr), a long hard climb on the Devil's Staircase, and beautiful rolling hills all throughout. We will begin our journey at the official start of the West Highland Way at Milngavie, a small town about 20mins from Glasgow airport. For the purpose of this trip, we have divided the 97-mile route in four stages; we will run the distance of at least a marathon on the first three days. We will go through forests and riverbanks, rocky terrain and easy trail paths; we’ll cross mountains, hills and the long Roman road beyond the Bridge of Orchy. Our scenery will change each day as we make our way towards the highlands. Each day is different, but equally spectacular. If the weather holds up, we may be treated to some extraordinary views! The last stage includes an incredibly long downhill section- make sure you master your downhill technique! Check out the photos below from my recce trip on Easter 2018. DATES: 18 April - 22 April 2019 DISTANCE: The total distance of the route is 97mi, with approximately 4000m (13, 000 ft) elevation gain. SCHEDULE: 18 April: Fly into Glasgow, stay for the night. 19 April: Bright and early start for Day 1, Milngavie to Rowardennan (27mi). 20 April: Day 2, Rowardennan to Tyndrum (26mi). 21 April: Day 3, Tyndrum to Kinlochleven (28mi). 22 April: Day 4, Kinlochleven to Fort William (16mi). We'll have our celebration meal in Fort William, transfers back to Glasgow Airport and flight back to London in the evening. During the day we will stop briefly for lunch for some hot food before carrying on! PACE: We will aim to run 11:30-12:30 min per mile as our FASTEST average pace (we have a long way to go!), walking the uphills and easy pace on flats and downhills. Note that this is not a race; we will start and finish the run each day, together. This trip is doable at a walking pace; however, should you decide to separate from the group during the day, you will need to be able to navigate the route yourself. APPROXIMATE COSTS: Accommodation: £150 Flights: £90 Luggage + Airport transfers: £60 Organiser's fee: £40 TOTAL: £340 *Important*: Please note that you will need to book your flights, accommodation and luggage transfers yourselves. I will send out recommendations for all of these once you have confirmed your place in the trip. TRAINING: While we will run this route at an enjoyable pace, do remember that 97mi is a very long way! To enjoy this trip as a trail run, I highly recommend having experienced walking/running at least 30mi/50km in a single day. To avoid any injuries, please ensure you train well before the trip. If you feel unsure, please feel free to reach out to me for a chat! TO RSVP PLEASE VISIT: https://www.meetup.com/outdooradventureclub/events/255295770/

  • JUNE 12 - 16 - ISLE OF MULL (SCOTLAND)

    Glasgow Airport

    £309.00

Backabush is going back to Scotland to visit the ISLE OF MULL! The Isle of Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebredies (after Skye) and its rugged mountains and wild peninsulas make it a dream destination for adventurous hikers. This irregularly shaped island covers over 800 sq km is fringe with dramatic cliffs along most of its convoluted coastline. With less than 3000 inhabitants in this vast space it gives us a clue as to why Mull is loved for its wild nature, which is also home to sea eagles, otters, seals and red deer. Dolphins are often spotted frolicking in the surf off shore. Our plan is to fly into Glasgow and then drive to the ferry port of Oban on the mainland from where we set sail for Mull. We will then enjoy 4 nights in a lovely hostel booked for our exclusive use. Classic walks on the Isle of Mull include: Ben More - the summit of Mull Dùn da Ghaoithe ridge - a superb ridge hike Carsaig Arches - spectacular and challenging coastal hiking The Isle of Mull also offers lovely beaches, pretty settlements and a number of fascinating historic sights. This is a delightful Scottish Isle which is worthy of many more days of exploration but our relatively short visit will offer us a little glimpse of its special beauty. It is especially good that we have managed to arrange to visit the Isle of Mull in June, at the absolute best time of year when the days are wonderfully long. Any earlier and the summit of Ben More could still be dangerously clad in snow, while any later and we will be bothered by midges (tiny biting flies) which can hatch out and swarm in the summer. • TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE – JULY 2 - 2019 - ARGENTINA

On July 2 this year we have a chance to see one of planet Earth's most amazing phenomena. A total solar eclipse! According to ECLIPSOPHILE http://eclipsophile.com/total-solar-eclipse-july-2-2019/ July finds Bella Vista (high in the Andes mountains of Argentina) in the midst of their winter dry season with little precipitation in the month. Nights are cool because of the season and the altitude (1900 m at Bella Vista), with temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Bella Vista lies in a deep north-south tectonic valley (sometimes called the Iglesias Valley) with the 6000-m Andes Mountains to the west and the 3400-m Precordillera to the east. The valley is narrow – only about 40 km wide – with a climate and geography that is comparable to that in Death Valley, California, though without the dunes. Because it is protected by terrain on the east and west, it lies in a particularly effective rain shadow and so has one of the driest climates in Argentina. It is also one of the sunniest regions in the country. This beautiful location in South America is definitely the place to witness the solar eclipse at its best so my plan is to fly into the nearby city of San Juan on Friday 28 June. From there I will look for transport to journey the 170km to Bella Vista up in the mountains. There will be thousands of people descending on this small rural village to witness the solar eclipse so all accommodation for miles around will have been fully booked months ago at extortionate prices. Therefore my plan it to bring a tent and food in order to be reasonably self sufficient. I am very sure that many farmers in the Iglesias Valley will be opening up their land to campers for a small fee but facilities are likely to be very basic. Anyone wishing to join me will need to first fly to Buenos Aires (approx £600 return) and then buy another flight to San Juan city. This region also has superb hiking so I plan to enjoy some great days out in the mountains before and after the solar eclipse as my flight back to Buenos Aires from San Juan is not until Sunday 7 July. Come join the adventure!

  • Trekking the Huayhuash Circuit: Peru

    Huaraz

The Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit has been described as possibly the best and most demanding alpine trek in the entire world! Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash is a vast and dramatic mountain range where condors soar amidst icy peaks while llamas, alpacas and viscachas roam the wilderness. We plan to undertake a long, high altitude trekking circuit which circumnavigates the entire range, crossing multiple high passes. Peru's second highest mountain (Yerupaja) can be found amongst the ice-fluted summits of the Huayhuash as can Siula Grande, the mountain made famous by Joe Simpson’s book, Touching the Void. Be warned - this is a genuinely remote and very high altitude trek which will challenge even fit and confident hikers! This is also a trek which will require a serious commitment of time and some expense too. We will first need to fly into Lima and then journey several hours north to Huaraz deep in the mountains. From Huaraz we will then need to spend 2 or 3 days out hiking in the mountains in order to acclimatise to the extreme altitude before our bodies will be sufficiently adjusted to cope with the journey into the Huauyhuash. Expect a true adventure into a vast region of huge mountains overlooking a wild landscape of rolling grassy meadows, moraine and steely blue-green glacial lagoons. This is unquestionably one of the finest high-altitude treks in the Andes, if not the world, which is suitable for fit hikers. Our plan is to undertake this trek guided by an experienced local team from this part of Peru. They will ensure we are well looked after and our camping gear is carried by donkeys, so each of us only needs to carry just a light backpack each day. Our Peruvian cooks will also keep us well fed by providing us with 5 meals a day! We intend to gather a small group of adventurous mountain trekkers to tackle this high altitude challenge over 14 days with the support of our Peruvian crew and their burros. At night we will camp out and temperatures can drop well below freezing. At the highest pass we will be above 5000m and we will rarely descend below 4000m. This trek is suitable only for fit hikers with previous trekking experience. You need to be able to endure tough consecutive days of walking in mountainous terrain at high altitudes. All in all you will require 3 weeks off work to join the trip as we will need about a week to allow for travel to and from the mountains and the acclimatisation day hikes from Huaraz. The trek itself is 14 days. As a general guide to fitness we would say that if you have climbed a high mountain like Kilimanjaro or are a keen weekend hill walker who likes the more challenging hikes, you might consider joining the Huayhuash Circuit Trek. IMPORTANT NOTES: SAFETY: We consider safety to be our number one priority and while we never take unnecessary risks, we do recognise that any outdoor activity involves a danger of personal injury or death. Remember that you should be aware of and accept these risks as you are responsible for your own safety and you should not undertake anything beyond your abilities. It is also your responsibility to be correctly equipped for the weather and activity you have chosen to participate in. INSURANCE: You will need to have travel insurance. It is recommended to have this in place at the time of booking your flight. It is also essential that you take out travel insurance that covers mountain activities over 5000 meters. The BMC offer excellent policies for all outdoor enthusiasts at competitive rates https://www.thebmc.co.uk/modules/insurance/Policies.aspx . VISA: Please check with the Peruvian embassy if you need a visa to travel there. It is your responsibility to obtain all necessary documents, including visa. BAGGAGE: Each person will be allowed 8kg to put on the burros during the trek. Basically this will include your clothes, toiletries, sleeping bag & camping mat. The expedition crew will be bringing the cooking equipment, food and tents.
