Come to Jenn and Ian's place to work on painting techniques for modifying plastic steampunk guns. Feel free to bring any plastic Nerf or other watergun or toy gun you wish to modify, and any painting supplies you have on hand. No painting experience necessary! We'll cover preparation, priming, drybrushing and blackwashing techniques, and sealing.

$3 materials fee to cover paint supplies, primer, sandpaper, and meetup dues for future meetups.

Jenn, what metallic colored marker pens did you give out at the meeting? They were "Sharpie" style, but not made by Sharpie company. We tried to locate the exact pens, to finish one of our pieces, but have been unable to find them. Thanks! Steve

I got them at Target (the one at Seven Corners specifically). Don't recall the exact brand and I'm in England until the end of July so cant check, but Ian can look when he's back? (Hes out visiting this weekend, flying back tomorrow.)

Thanks, Jenn. We will check for them ourselves.

Thank you all for a great afternoon of crafting. We would be willing to host either in Oct or Nov. Any suggestion of topic or craft?

    June 22, 2014

    • Jenn

Alternatively, that would also be something that would work really well over a dinner somewhere, too. Could do it at a house (a la potluck) or at a restaurant, too.

We don't usually do specific characters with Steampunk. The one exception to that rule was last years DragonCon, where the 5 of us were Steampunk characters from the game Clue.

Heh - well, depends on when. I'm around this week after work most evenings far as I know, but Ian goes out of town Wed and I leave for England Sat.

Depends on time - a friend of mine is having a going-away dinner. I can always put it in a bag and leave it on the porch?

What was the type of sealent that you had in spray can, to use on the piece to finish it? Exact type?

This was a really great introduction to the steampunk world and can't wait to put some new ideas into costumes.

Hope you enjoyed Cards Against Humanity. Or at least weren't so offended that you leave the group and/or call the police.

      June 21, 2014

    • Jenn

Hee! Was great having you out, I'll work on getting you in touch with Steampunk family out your way too. :)

Hey guys, I'm not feeling well so I won't make it to the event. Please post pictures! I've gotten a Nerf Firestrike pistol to mod so I'm interested in ideas.

Sorry to hear, feel better soon!

I wanted to mention, that besides using paint on plastic toys for costuming, we have had success with simple pen markers. They come in variety of colors, including steampunk metals. We took some terrible looking blue star trek phasers, and converted them into very professionally looking ones. People have asked to buy them from us. We will bring them to show on Sat.

      Sharpies

Paint pens chip. I did spray paint the pastic black first, to give my wife a good solid primer to use the Sharpies on.

Just a quick reminder for this Saturday! I'll have paint, primer, sandpaper, etc but please bring your own gun or other thingamabob to mod! They're too individual to be able to pick them out for everyone.

Also feel free to bring snacks or something to share if you like. I'll have some soda, iced tea, and chips but folks are welcome to bring other things as needed. If weather is nice, we'll be outside. If it's as hot as it's been, I'll set up some card tables inside and we'll just take shifts around the three tables.

I don't have any props yet. Any recommendations on Nerf gun styles, or other cheapie toys? I see a trip to the local dollar store or Five Below in my future... ;)

Eh, Big Lots was a bust, but that was a good idea. I'm still scouting around for something that intrigues me. If I don't find my "perfect" weapon I'll get something to experiment on. :)

      June 9, 2014

    • Jenn

Getting something to experiment on isn't a bad idea anyway - save the "big guns" for once you have some techniques down.

Hey guys! Would it be ok to move this event to Sat, June 21? Sewing class conflict for me on the 22nd. That or we can do evening of the 22nd, around 7. Please let me know. Thanks!

Okay, asked the powers that be (or at least that do the work schedule) to switch my day off. Hopefully, that will work out.

      Fingers crossed!

Karen, Toys R Us has a huge collection of Nerf guns and other Weapons of Mass Destruction.

    1 · June 3, 2014

    • JAM

I think you mean "Foam Destruction," but yes, indeed they do. You can also find Nerf stuff on EBay, Amazon, and I think they have their own website. The Maverick model is probably the most frequently modded one for Steampunk.

    May 31, 2014

No worries! Happy to host a second round if folks turn out. I wanted to get something making-oriented in June as I'll be out of the area all of July.

    May 30, 2014

  • Karen G.

I'm RSVP'ing as a maybe. I really want to do this but June is crazy busy so I may have to bow out.
