Baltimore Science Fiction Society Pages

The Baltimore Science Fiction Society is a non-profit organization first founded in 1963. Our members are interested in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and associated genres in all their forms. Our membership is diverse, held together by an appreciation for speculative fiction and our desire to support and promote it.

The BSFS Building is the host site for most of our functions and is the home of our lending library. We have regular business and planning meetings there, as well as social events such as author readings, anime screenings, boardgaming sessions, and writer workshops. The public is invited to come out to all of our events.

BSFS is run entirely by volunteers. Our largest event each year is Balticon, the Maryland Regional Science Fiction Convention. Balticon features authors, editors, publishers, artists, filmmakers, and, most importantly, fans. Balticon has panels, videos, an art show, dealers room, boardgaming, masquerade (costume contest), and writer's workshop. Balticon also has an outstanding science program, a short film competition, and has programming designed for all age groups including young fans. It is held on Memorial Day weekend every year.

Annually, the members of BSFS present the Compton Crook Award to an author who published their first book in the genre in the previous year. We sponsor a short story writing contest for young writers between the ages of 14 and 18, named after a founding member, science fiction author Jack Chalker. We also raise money to donate to a local school library to fund free reading books of their own for students.
