TIME CHANGE: "Polisse", winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes 2011

Polisse is a vivid portrait of the Paris police department’s Child Protection Unit, a tight-knit group of colleagues whose emotionally draining work (like protecting children from sexual predators within their own family) affects their private lives as well as their relationships on the job. The grisly, sometimes heartbreaking cases they encounter on a daily basis would touch, or distress, anyone not made of stone.  There are no weak links in the cast, an impressive array of French cinema stalwarts who make their flawed characters seem absolutely real. Polisse is an extreme alternative to the Hollywood summer movie—the polar opposite of escapism. But it is a striking and unusual piece of work that’s well worth seeing.

9:00 pm - Walk to the theater. We will buy the tickets together so the group can sit together.  Tickets are only 100 baht per person (every-day price there).

9:20 pm - 11:40 pm - The movie, "Polisse" at the Apex Lido Cinema, Siam Square.

Because this movie is later than usual, we will not be holding our regular 10-minute discussion of the film afterwards.  This will allow you to get to the Skytrain before it closes.

You can attend the coffee hour and/or the movie.  You don't have to be at both.

Click on "Will you attend?", above right to RSVP that you will be there.

(1) Leave the BTS Skytrain Siam (Central) Station at Exit 2.  Next, skip to Step (2).

If you're not arriving by Skytrain and you're walking under the Skytrain station towards MBK, pass by True Coffee (not the one where we will be) and the Apple Shop in the building called "Digital Gateway". Next, skip to step (3).

(2) When you reach the bottom of the stairs, do a "U-turn" to head in the opposite direction past True Coffee (not the one where we will be) and the Apple Shop in the building called "Digital Gateway."

(3) When you reach the cross street, you are at Siam Square Soi 3

(4) Turn left and walk one block. On the corner, you will see True Life / True Coffee.  (The two other True Coffee shops in Siam Square do not have "True Life" in their name.)  It's across the street from Kasikorn Bank (K-Bank). We will be on the ground floor.

Grab coffee and a snack and join us for 60 minutes of conversation before we go to the movie!

Absolutely out of the box, really so French. I caught the live hard party hard when living in the fast lane, a cops do.

The subject was very dark as Ken mention, but there was also part which showed the compassionate heart of humans. My appreciation Art had you not chosen this movie I doubt I would ever have seen it.

    The end blew me completely!

I hope to see the next movie you select!

    Looking frorward.

At times, it felt like I was watching a documentary on The Child Protection Unit of a French police force. That's when I really enjoyed this film. Sadly the filmmaker is guilty of jamming too many dramatic scenes in the second half of the film making an already too long movie even longer! 3 out of 4 stars.

Agree - good movie - but so much dialogue and so rapid - reading the subtitles was like reading a novel as a speed reader. The child abuse was so dark but I think not at all unrealistic - I do feel that the French romance/affairs was exaggerated - it was like every person was having an affair - but still very interesting - despite the length.

The other great thing about this meeting is all the diverse and interesting people who attend - it is always great to meet everyone from around the world - Thanks Art !!
