The price is 2,000 baht per two people. This price is much higher than our usual movies because this movie (of a live London theater performance) is being shown at one of the Bangkok Airways’ Blue Ribbon Screens at Paragon Cineplex (free refreshments and free massage), a VIP screen with couch seats that are sold only for two people.
In the turmoil of the Vietnam War, Chris, an American soldier, and Kim, a Vietnamese girl, fall in love and marry but are separated when Saigon falls (by the enforced American evacuation of Saigon in 1975). And this leads to the musical's most famous scene of a helicopter whisking troops off the American embassy roof. As years pass, Chris, unable to contact Kim, remarries and attempts to move on with his life. Kim, however, gives birth to Chris' son and waits faithfully for Chris' return. When circumstances bring Chris back to Vietnam, he learns the truth but, before he is able to speak with Kim, she takes her own life to ensure that their son will be taken back to America with his father.
The story line for this musical is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, "Madame Butterfly" and both tell the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover.
The movie is of the London West End revival for the show's 25th year. It was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Laurence Connor. On September 22, 2016, a special 25th anniversary gala performance was held. This is what we will be seeing in this Meetup event. After a full performance of the current show, Lea Salonga, Simon Bowman, Jonathan Pryce, and many of the original 1989 cast will be seen joining with the current cast for a special finale.
This filmed version of the musical’s live 25th-anniversary celebration in London made its world premiere in 175 US cinemas on Sept 22, 2016, some six months before the same production with the same leading actors lands on Broadway. On December 8, this production can be seen in Bangkok. Be sure to join us then.
