There are apparently only two truly caring elephant sanctuaries in Thailand and both are in Chiang Mai province. I've investigating into them quite a lot.

I always believe and have tested in practice that it's good to pay attention how small things are taken care of, for example, other minors: cats, dogs etc. Unfortunately, in Bkk, believe it or not, no a decent rescue organization/shelter that would come and pick up a deadly ill animal. Whenever you, or in my case I asked a Thai to speak to them, they just give you excuses or keep referring you elsewhere, where no help is coming whatsoever. Nevertheless all the charity web sites are translated into English and ask for donations... How fair. Over a year now I've been battling to stand up and in vain... It feels very sad. But I want to thank you once again for taking time and researching for me on a rescue place. It still worth trying every single avenue before giving up. :)

I guess no organization can do 100% in handling their activities, it never exist anywhere in the world not only here in Thailand. Elephant is a symbol of this country, for several years they've been running shows and activities involving adult and baby elephants and been contested by many animal activists, I include myself with them. But somehow we should also accept the fact that it's already there, and for what reason? Tourism. Visitors of this country likes them, patronize them and willing to pay huge bucks for them. So let's say it's part of the industry and reality bites.

    Hey everyone,

At first I got very excited at reading all the great reviews about the place but then digging more into it (reviews of more observant people) - it turns out that elephants are being constantly poked on their foreheads with spiky sticks if they don't want to go into the water for bathing or just out of mahouts' boredom. The elephants are reportedly chained to the trees for almost the whole day. Also there are reports of the dogs living on the not up-to-standard premises that look neglected.

I haven't, but read some negative reviews reflecting the details of elephants mistreatment with bull hooks. Of course it depends on a mahout. But if the organization lets go and keeps such a mahout, then it may well mean more abuse under the table. Please, do let me know what you've noticed after visiting the park. Thanks.

      June 18, 2013

    • Cel

Hi again. I guess some negative reviews are made by people who were dissatisfied with the activities they got involved with, like those who participated with very high expectations. It gave them the option to look for the flaws in the organization, finding ways to discredit their effort taking care of these elephants. A simple mistake by a mahout could misrepresent the sanctuary itself, but they're the only one who could discipline these elephants. Animals can go out of control sometimes and handling them might look mistreating to others but maybe it's the only way.
