    Needs a location

    £420.00

June 24th-28th 2010 Price £ 420 - 464 € (today's exchange rate) Come along to this unique break. We'll be spending four wonderful days visiting the best of Istanbul, including what tourists often miss, the real Istanbul. Voted as one of the most exciting cities on the planet, this is a chance to enjoy this most inspiring city before it gets the European gentrification treatment and loses its uniqueness. As well as visiting the historic Istanbul we'll be exploring and mingling with Istanbulites and for those energetic enough, enjoying the exciting nightlife. Bathed by the calm waters of the Bosphorus strait, the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn, Istanbul is a sprawling city of approximately 15 million people. A landscape of domes and minarets, of old Ottoman wooden houses and modern apartment buildings, of wide avenues and small cobblestone lanes, of traditional wares stores and swanky designer shops, of tea houses and modern cocktail bars, of XVI century hamams and luxurious spas, of mouthwatering turkish cuisine lokantas and modern fusion restaurants, of traditional turkish music bars and cutting edge clubs, of jazz festivals and street festivals, of cozy cafes and minimalistic bars. A place where, following its age-old hospitality, everyone is welcome and seemingly opposites, the secular and religious, mystical and earthly, modern and traditional, coexist in harmony. Once termed as a wonder of the world, for all its Historic richness, it is a refreshingly candid and unpretentious city guaranteed to satisfy all tastes. • Sitges day – Walk and beach picnic

    Location visible to members

    €4.00

WHAT'S THE PLAN? We'll get together at Sants station and board the train to Sitges. A short 35 minutes train journey will take us to this pretty coastal village. Sitges has a picturesque old town and a lovely beach boulevard that stretches for a good 5 kms. The watches will have gone forward by then and we'll be able to enjoy a long day out. We'll walk the length of the beach and then we'll have a picnic. Later we'll visit the old town and go for a drink to a secluded garden in one of Sitges' iconic Hotels dating back to the late 1800's. PICNIC: Each to bring their own but it'd be nice if we make a little effort in preparing one "typical" dish from our part of the world to share with the others or our "trademark" dish . I'll set an example by bringing my very own, home-made, finger-licking guacamole. WHY COME? Because it's fun, it's outdoorsy, it's different and if you don't come you'll miss a fabulous day out. I'm requesting a 4 Euro payment which you can pay when we meet.

  • Calçotada – A Mediterranean Feast

    Needs a location

    £80.00

Calçotada season in Valls-Tarragona Price: £ 80 14th March Includes private transport to/from Tarragona ( 2 hour drive approx) Calçotada meal ( all courses, cava, wine, dessert, coffee) We'll have the chance to meet other member's of our London group travelling over for this fun gastronomic activity. You won't have to bother with trekking along to get on public transport or organize buying tickets for calcotadas. All you need to do is book and turn up at the meeting point, you'll be driven to a little known hamlet in Valls where a sumptuous feast awaits us. The restaurant where we'll be going – a gorgeous ancient stone house – books up a year in advance, we managed to get a reservation on the last available time slot of the year!! Early booking is highly recommended as there are limited places. What is a calçotada? This is a traditional meal consisting mainly of calçots. A calçot is a type of spring onion resembling a leek, it's sweet and delicious and it's carefully grown by a method of re-sprouting. They are left to sprout and then they are unearthed only to be half-covered in earth again to maintain a white, succulent stem. This method takes the better part of one year and the resulting delicacy is eaten traditionally between the end of November and end of March, the spring onion festival season . Calçots are originary from Valls in the province of Tarragona, a hidden area south of Barcelona and little known to tourists. The typical way to have this meal consists of a large number of people, friends, family, work colleagues and a large appetite. The calçots are chargrilled over a local vine shoots fire prepared on the ground. Once the calçots are cooked they are piled into the hollow grooves of terracota roofing tiles and served on the table, there's no limit to how many calçots you can have, they'll keep on bringing heaped tiles until you say stop. The way to eat the calçot is to pinch its head and pull from the green stem until you uncover the luscious creamy white stem, then you dip it in the delicious romesco sauce, tip your head back and drop it in your mouth. Everyone is given a bib and soon you understand why. To help the calçot down, wine is drank from the typically Spanish porron, a spouted round glass bottle, tip your head back , point the tip of the spout to your mouth and lift the porron as high as you can, you are supposed to drink wine without spilling a drop, this is when the bib starts to look less silly. Next, grilled lamb and longaniza ( a white chorizo type sausage) are served in a terracota pot over a bed of coals, next to them, generous servings of black butifarra sausage, barbecued artichokes and tender ganxet white beans are presented on large dishes and everyone tucks in. For dessert, oranges, a lusty crema catalana and lashings of cava. If you only do a gastronomic break this year, make sure you don't miss out on the opportunity to enjoy a calçotada. Please, download the "Calcotada" pdf file on the Files section (http://www.meetup.com/Barcelona-Women-Activities-Travel-Group/files/) for full details. Drop Marina a line if you need help or have any question.
