Barnsley Mountain Bikers - A not for profit MTB club.
Founded in the spring of 2014 to fill a gap between the established Peak District and Yorkshire Dales MTB areas which require the MTBers of South Yorkshire to spend a full day away from home to get a ride of a couple of hours or so in. During the course of our first season we established interesting rides within the North Sheffield/South Yorks areas that give a half day's riding at the weekends and midweek evening rides that can easily be completed after work hours.
We welcome all newcomers of all levels of ability and experience, and especially riders with knowledge of local routes to share. We also will take young adults under aged 16-18 out on the trail. However we require that an adult over the age of 18 accompanies you, and that the first couple of BMB rides are at the easier end of MTB to assess your ability. You and your parent/guardian will also need to complete a sign on form. We are required by the clubs insurers to take these precautions. On requesting membership there are some Insurance Terms and Conditions that will be deemed to have been accepted by joining BMB. Please take the time to read them.
The clubs running costs are recouped through an annual membership fee. This is £8pa payable in January and will include a £1 donation to the Woodhead Mountain Rescue team and a £1 donation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Members may try BMB for free, for as many rides that they can attend for one month from their first ride after which the annual subscription will be applicable. Riders are considered to be starting the free trial month from the first time out.
In order to keep the current membership active at all times, unpaid up members that are not active for more than 2 months are routinely de-listed, but may rejoin at any time in the future and pay the clubs annual subs to become a full member.
The annual cost of running BMB on Meetup.com is approximately £300 which comprises of the cost of hosting on the Meetup platform, and insuring the ride leaders against any personal liability. The £1 Mountain Rescue and Air Ambulance donations are to anticipate appreciation of any future use of those services. Once we are away from NHS ambulance crew access, we are squarely into mountain rescue territory!
During the 2017 season we would like to extend our rides out beyond the Penistone and Barnsley N East areas which we concentrated on developing during the 2015/16 seasons. If you know know some fun rides that would appeal to BMB riders, then become one of us and share your rides as a rider or leader in a new area... We are BMB!
New for 2017, as organiser I am retiring to the Highlands of Scotland, in doing so I have now set up Blairgowrie Mountain Bikers on Meetup. All BMB members may join as associate members of this group as I would like to start organising some Highland away breaks for BMB to experience some of the great vastness and ruggedness of the Highlands.
BMB now has a Strava club profile to share ride routes among BMB members. Send a join request to BMB on Strava.
