• Mt Tam Madness: Potluck - Cataract Ck, Cross Country, ???
Hi guys, I'm in the Bay Area for the weekend, so let's do an encore mad-capped hike and have some fun in the woods! This hike will NOT take us to the top of Tam like last time. This will be about a 6 mile hike - Moderate (depending on your condition), w/ roughly a 1250' elevation gain, taking in Cataract Creek, Cataract Falls, Laurel Dell, Potrero Picnic Area, Potrero Meadow, and possibly a couple other spots. We'll see where we get ;-) ... A lot will depend on the group and how chill or not you're feeling. What To Bring: Vino! (and cups) Good Hiking Boots/shoes Layered clothing, hat, sunscreen. Vino & Snacks for our pre-lunch vino\snack break. Energy bars are highly recommended. Food for the potluck: (packed w/ carbs) and more food: I.E. wraps, cut up sandwiches, cheeses/breads/crackers, dried fruit/nuts, chips, dips, use your imagination. At least 1 liter of water (2 is better) Fill w/ 1/2 water & 1/2 ice. Anything else you want to drink (juice, tea, beer, etc.) $5 activity fee I expect you know what to expect by now Normally there's plenty of food - so what happened? Some people get really excited on this one. Please note: This hike is completely different than "From The Dam Up" - we will not be on that side of Tam today. Directions: GPS[masked],[masked] Your sense of humour is an absolute must! This hike is posted to several Meetup grps, so this is a good opportunity to make new friends. See you there!

  • Day On Angel Island: Hike, Picnic/BBQ/Party - Serious Fun!
Back by popular demand...Here we go! The Plan: We'll hike the perimeter of the island for amazing panoramic views of the Bay Area! This will be a 6 mile hike (total) which will take us up above Ayala Cove for a view of Racoon Straights and eventually completely around the island. There will be views of The Richmond Bridge, The East Bay, The Bay Bridge, San Francisco, and as we head west we'll see the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin. Naturally there will be a vino/snack break along the trail, so we can take in the views of Alcatraz, SF, The Bay Bridge, and the East Bay while replenishing with some munchies and vino. The rating for this hike is easy-moderate, which of course is contingent upon your condition. PLEASE NOTE: Either meet at the Tiburon ferry at 9:45 or on the island at the picnic area to the right of the dock, past the open field w/ the museum. If you've been on this one before you know where to find us. The hike generally starts at around 10:45 or so Also Note: We'll leave the food and most of the vino at the picnic area, then take our hike. We'll only bring snacks and some vino to enjoy on the hike. What to bring: Vino (and cups) Food to BBQ - I'll have the coals Snacks and vino for the hike. Your appetite! A cooler w/ ice and plenty of food Food to BBQ - I'll have the coals Sandwiches, wraps, bbq, paella, chicken, meats/cheeses/breads, salads, quiches, deserts, the works! As always I'm hoping for plenty of ethnic food. Not just boring hamburgers and hot dogs. We're talking variety here, and lots of spice! Plenty of Vino - we had some really nice bottles last time Beer, water, soda, juice, tea, whatever you want to whet your whistle Chips, dips, snacks, and plenty to share Layered clothing, sunscreen & hat Hiking boots, or decent hiking shoes $5 activity fee Please don't forget: your sense of humour and desire for fun is an absolute must! The hike is optional, so if you want to come chill while we hike and then eat, drink, and be merry w/ the rest of us after the hike - do it! It's always nice to have a few people stay w/ the coolers/food while we hike. Directions to ferry: From US 101 heading Northbound Take the Tiburon Blvd exit, turn right, and follow Tiburon Blvd 4 miles into downtown Tiburon. Turn right on Main St. The ferry is located on the left at 21 Main St. From US 101 heading Southbound Same exit as above, except take a left over the overpass. Instructions from overpass are the same as above. Map and Parking Information: Park at any of the banks $5, and walk a few blocks to the ferry terminal. The ferry costs $15.00 (Round trip). NO CREDIT CARDS - Bring cash. Meet at the ferry dock at 9:45am - Ferry leaves at 10:00am sharp - they won't wait. GPS[masked],[masked] Return ferry runs 20 past ea hour. I.E. ferry leaves island at 4:20pm, last ferry is at 5:20pm. Typically several of us go to Guaymas for drinks, chips & salsa, and snacks, at the end of the day. Great way to cap off the summer!!! This is the largest event of the year, and is posted to several Meetup sites - so plan on a full day of fun, food, and merriment, while meeting some cool people and making new friends.

  • Last Minute: Lassen National Park
Date: 9/16-9/17 Where: Lassen National Park (Manzanita Lake Campground) Meetup location: General store parking lot I was thinking about doing Yosemite this weekend but with the recent fire and heavy smog that clouds the valleys. It just makes it an unpleasant experience. As a result, I was thinking about doing Lassen National Park instead. We will be back to the bay area before 7:00pm on Sunday. There are plenty of hikes to do and campsites are still available via first come first serve. Shower and laundry are available at site for those concern with building up a sweat. Food for campsite can be purchase via along the route and at the general store where basic food are available. We can keep things simple and just enjoy the trip. Let me know what you think and if you are interested in coming in exploring this beautiful place with me. Recommended gear: 1. sleeping bag 2. good pair of shoes/boot 3. 1 liter of water 4. $25 bucks = gas, food and camp fee...that's it! P.S. For anyone who would like to meet up for for carpool can meet me at the Lake Merritt Bart parking lot. My contact number is[masked] I know its last minute but I am sure we can wing it and have a lot of fun.

  • Mt Tam: Rock Springs, Portreo Meadow, Bare Knoll, Cataract Ck
Looking for a full Saturday of fun? Then there's a good chance this hike is for you. I'm told the guy that leads it is a barrel of laughs (OK, so maybe he's just funny looking), but fun is fun! This will be about a 6 mile hike - Mostly Mellow to Moderate w/ maybe just a wee bit of strenuous (depending on your condition), and roughly a 1000' elevation gain, taking in Portreo Meadow, Rifle Camp, Bare Knoll, Cataract Creek, and maybe Laural Dell. At some point we'll follow Cataract Creek, but who knows when that might be? If the weather's warm we can dip into one the those nice swimming holes we know about. I'm currently in New Mexico with plenty of sun and 90* temps. The views on this hike are breath taking with some incredible vistas and panoramas. Our vino/snack break will be in the forest, and lunch will be on top of a knoll with some amazing panoramic views! What To Bring: Vino! (and cups) Good Hiking Boots/shoes Layered clothing, hat, sunscreen. Vino/Snacks for our pre-lunch vino break. Food for the potluck: Wraps, cut up sandwiches, cheeses/meats/breads/crackers, chicken, fish, dried salmon, dried fruit/nuts, chips, dips, whatever. You know the routine! At least 1 liter of water (2 is better) Fill w/ 1/2 water & 1/2 ice. Anything else you want to drink (juice, tea, beer, etc.) $5 activity fee (I've lowered this with the hope of a large group, though I still have to cover a rental car), so bring your friends and their friends! Your desire for fun, food, friends, connection, and laughter - you know what to expect Sadly, he is no longer with us. One of these days I'm going to have to find his replacement. Some people get really excited on this one. Directions: GPS[masked], [masked] Your sense of humour is an absolute must! This hike is posted to several Meetup grps, so this is a good opportunity to make new friends. See you there!

  • Camping, hiking, kayaking & fireworks
**PLEASE NOTE, THIS MEETUP IS LIMITED TO 8 PEOPLE DUE TO CAMPSITE CAPACITY.** Join us for two nights of camping and hiking at beautiful Lake Sonoma, with optional kayaking and wine tasting excursions. **Important things to know:** The campsite is a walk-in site that is 1 miles from the trailhead. You will have to carry in your camping gear, food and water (there's no potable water at the campsite - but since it's only one mile in, it should be easy to hike out for additional water supply as needed). Lake Sonoma offers great opportunities for hiking and swimming, and kayak rentals are available the nearby marina. Schedule: Leave Bay Area around 10 am on Sunday ,July 2. Drive to Lake Sonoma, about 2 to 2-1/2 hours north of SF/Oakland, with optional stops for wine tasting near Healdsburg/Dry Creek on the way. Camp at Lake Sonoma Sunday and Monday nights (2nd and 3rd). We'll be in Quick Silver Campground (see map here): http://www.californiasgreatestlakes.com/sonoma/lake_sonoma_map.html More info about kayak rentals and other boating options: http://www.lakesonoma.com/boat-rentals---rates.html On Tuesday the 4th we'll leave camp around 11am or noon, and drive to the town of Sonoma. There's a 4th of July festival at Sonoma Plaza with food, drinks, game booths, etc. Then we'll grab dinner before returning to the plaza to enjoy the fireworks display at dusk. Info on the Sonoma 4th of July festivities: http://www.sonomavolunteerfirefighters.org/events/fourth-of-july/ We'll return home to the Bay Area that night after the fireworks. Due to the campsite capacity, THIS MEETUP IS LIMITED TO 8 PEOPLE (the meetup site doesn't seem to allow me to place a limit on the number of attendees). Carpools will be coordinated at a later time. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

  • Day On Angel Island: Hike To The Top - 360* Views, Potluck BBQ and Serious Fun
I'm back in the area for a few days, so let's have some fun on Angel Island! The Plan: We'll hike to the top of the island for a 360* panoramic view of the Bay Area! This will be a 6 mile hike (total) which will take us up above Alaya Cove for a view of Racoon Straights and eventually up to the top. There will be views of The Richmond Bridge, The East Bay, The Bay Bridge, and San Francisco, then as we head west we'll see the Golden Gate Bridge and Mt Tam. Naturally there will be a vino/snack break at the top, so we can take in the 360* view while replenishing with some munchies and vino. After the hike we'll have a big BBQ/food extravaganza/party at the picnic area (see details below). If people want to bring some games - we played bocce one time - lots of fun! The rating for this hike is easy-moderate, which of course is contingent upon your condition. It's a gradual incline as we head up, so anyone can do this one, and the views from the top are worth every step. So, if you've been on any of my hikes you know what to expect! We'll only bring snacks and some vino to enjoy on the top. The hike is optional and negotiable (as is everything in life), so if you want to come chill while we hike and then eat, drink, and be merry w/ the rest of us after the hike - do it! It's always nice to have a few people stay w/ the coolers/food while we hike, since you never know when a whale might beach itself in search of some good snacks.
