Speaker Series: Science, Pseudoscience, East, West

"A Reason for Reason" skeptical speaker series, in association with CFI, brings continents and cultures together for August...

Please join us and tell fellow critical thinkers!

SCIENCE, PSEUDOSCIENCE, EAST, WEST:
Critical Thinking when New & Old Worlds Meet

Turkey is a land of beautiful contradictions. Just like it’s landmass lies from Asia to Europe, it is simultaneously the East and the West. The call to prayer echoes five times a day in the streets of Istanbul, yet the same streets are filled with bars and loud music during the evenings. The beliefs and superstitions of people are also a unique mixture of pagan traditions from the ancient ages, Islamic beliefs and imported modern western woo.

This talk samples pseudoscience from the old continent, explores the growing skeptical movement in Turkey, and discusses challenges of being a Turkish skeptic.

About the Speaker:

Isil Arican M.D., is graduated from Ege University School of Medicine in Turkey and holds a certificate for Anti-Aging Medicine from ESAAM (European Society of Anti-Aging Medicine). She's been working as a Healthcare IT consultant since arriving in the Bay Area in 2008, is a leading translator of TED Talks, and is the founder and the author of Yalansavar, a Turkish grassroots skeptical blog with more than 3000 regular followers. As a science advocate, she also contributes to an online monthly popular science magazine Acik Bilim as an author and editor.

WHEN: 7:30 PM, Monday August 26, 2013 (Talk starts at 8 PM sharp)
WHERE: Downstairs at Kells Irish Pub, 530 Jackson Street, San Francisco, CA 94133

I said nothing astute, had another thought & was interrupted. Have to suspend a reading group I host, but pseudoscience mires my world. Relatives. Yikes.
