Religious people typically rely on their belief systems to give their lives meaning and a moral compass as well as traditions on how to respond to the joys and challenges of life. The idea that life goes on after death and loved ones will be reunited in an afterlife can be comforting. How do those who do not believe in a supernatural god or afterlife deal with life and death?
We will view the first part of the video “Hug An Atheist” which “shows how atheists think and live in positive and honest terms and how they deal with some of the most central and universal questions of human life”. In the first part of the video, atheists and humanists discuss their ideas on morality, raising children and marriage. After the video, Millie Phillips, who identifies as a humanists, will lead us in a discussion of our own experiences. Millie served the needs of theists and non-theists alike as a hospital chaplain.
We’ll start at 1:00 in the Martin Luther King room. Lunch will be available for purchase. Everyone is welcome.
