Magnificat Celebrates Charpentier's Messe de Minuit - 3 Bay Area Concerts $15.00

Magnificat has long championed the music of the remarkable Marc-Antoine Charpentier and this season we turn to his best-known work: the delightful Messe de Minuit (Midnight Mass). Drawing on the popular melodies of French Christmas carols, or noëls, Charpentier preserves their charming simplicity in achieving a perfect synthesis of popular art and the lush elegance of the Age of Louis XIV. The program will also include Charpentier’s Dialogus inter Angelos et Pastores and noel settings by Nicolas LeBegue and André Raison. SF Classical Says, "Around the Bay Area, it's becoming almost as traditional to hear Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Midnight Mass as Handel's Messiah. And it's easy to see why: Charpentier based his glorious work on 11 humble noëls — Christmas carols, a novel strategy for a whole mass, and one that insured it would be his most popular piece by far. In fact, this lovely, seasonal piece will be performed first by the Calvary Presbyterian Chancel Choir in San Francisco on Dec. 10. But if you're going to take it in only once, you might want to wait for Charpentier experts Magnificat, who have adopted this piece as their annual contribution to the seasonal festivities." Don't Miss This Wonderful Concert Charpentier's Midnight Mass, Dec. 17, 8 p.m., St. Patrick's Seminary, Menlo Park; Dec. 18, 8 p.m. St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Berkeley Dec. 19, 4 p.m., St. Mark's Lutheran Church, S.F., $12-$35. This performance was absolutely stunning. Everything was first rate: the vocalists, the seasoned instrumentalists on period instruments, the balance and perfect execution of complex and ornamented cadences, the sensitive conducting and impeccable ensemble work. Not to mention the glorious score of Charpentier. Bravo! It was a memorable evening at St Mark's, one I shall treasure.
