Sierra Club Snowcamping Training Series Winter 2018: Interest Page
Each year for almost 50 years we have introduced 100+ backpackers to the joys of winter camping. In addition to the mandatory orientation day which this year is scheduled for Saturday, January 20th in Emeryville (exact location will be available upon acceptance) each group will go out for a one-night trip and a two-night trip. The one-night trip is pre-requisite for the two-night trip. We usually fill 6-7 adult groups plus a family group which accepts children as young as seven and several youth groups. For those who have already taken the training series we also offer alumni trips to popular locations like Dewey Point in Yosemite or with specific themes like igloo-building. The orientation day is open to individuals who have submitted an application and have been accepted for the Training Series. Trip dates are listed in the table below and applications are now available at ( The deadline for applications is December 16 but early-birds who apply before November 30th will receive a discount. Please see fee schedule below In the past the training series has filled to capacity, so apply early to ensure you get trip dates that work best for you. The only requirement is previous summer backpacking experience and a reasonable level of fitness. We teach you how to adapt your summer gear, where ever possible for winter use. Most students travel on snowshoes although back-country skiers are welcome to take skis on the 2nd trip with the approval of their leaders. Evenings find us gathered in a large and often creative snow-kitchen sharing food, libations and experiences. Our usual group size is 15 - 20 so be prepared to make many new friends. It takes an adventurous person to consider that winter camping could be fun but be assured that with the right gear and a few tricks the rewards are worth it. If this sounds like you then sign up today. Many years we fill up and have had to turn people away.

What we're about

Public Group

Meet other local outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, surfing, etc. This meetup is about enjoying the outdoors with others. I would like others to let me know of activities they would like to see happen and I will help organize. Dog owners are also encouraged to join since there are too few groups that permit dogs at times. All those who are dedicated to outdoor excursions near and far should sign up.
