3801 Panoramic Highway, Mill Valley, CA
This is the only Saturday that will work for me in the latter half of this month, so NY Eve it is!
This month we'll hike along the southeastern side of the peak of Mount Tamalpais. There are great views of the city and the Bay Area south of Mt. Tam, so I thought it would be nice for a New Years Eve hike.
We'll meet at the Pan Toll Station on Mt. Tam. Here's the map (don't use Meetups maps):
This location is well known enough that I'm not going to worry about putting pics. But here's what the map link above should show you:
You can pay for parking at Pan Toll. Or you can park in free spots along the Panoramic Highway between Mill Valley and Pan Toll. There's also some places along the side of Pan Toll Road above Pan Toll Station. But if all else fails, you can pay $10 at Pan Toll.
The hike is approximately 4.5 miles round trip (it is a loop). We start out for a short while in the woods, hiking up the Old Mine Trail. We then cut through the Mountain Amphitheater and get on the Rock Spring Trail, which starts out woodsy but then becomes brush land. We'll take our break along that trail with a great view of the Bay and then loop back to Pan Toll on the Old Stage Road. We might take a 2nd break at the West Point Inn, which is where the Rock Spring Trail meets the Old Stage Road, but we'll decide that at the time. Old Mine Trail is moderately steep at points but the rest of the hike is either level or slightly downhill, so it's not that challenging.
We will cancel for rain the morning of if necessary. We'll likely take the full time allotted. If it is imperative that you be back at your car before 4:30, please plan to depart from the group early or consider another hike.
**PLEASE NOTE*** We/I have no idea if cells or GPS will work here, so please take the time to get directions (both what I wrote above and using "get directions" from google) and milage markers before you leave so that you can meet us at the designated place and time. I've been told that if you must use GPS, set it to satellite and that works. But I can not verify that, personally. We'll wait 10 to 15 minutes for everyone and then will begin the hike. Let me know if you have any questions.
See you then!
