Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve: Stewartville Loop

  • Apr 14, 2012 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Black Diamond is located in Contra Costa County, south of Pittsburg and Antioch. Take Highway 4 to the Somersville Road exit in Antioch, then drive south (toward the hills) on Somersville Road to the Preserve entrance. We will start the hike from the main parking lot.

The hike is about 7.6 miles, about 5 hours.

Please bring enough water, snacks and your camera for the hike.
I won't be providing any supplies.

'This loop from Nortonville to Stewartville, two long-vanished mining towns, is like a trip back in time. Where eager miners pried coal loose from deep underground with clanging picks and shovels, only mine tailings and tunnels remain today. Other echoes of the Old West are grassy valleys dotted with grazing cows and sweeping vistas from high ridgetops.

Up date, as you can see I am now on the list to attend the hike. My offer is still good, if anyone needs a ride from the concord area let me know.

I live in the concord area. If any one needs a ride I can meet you at the bart station. I am #1 on the waiting list, from what I have experienced someone on the going list always is a no show. This allows room for the rest of us. Let me know.

Good question: Just checked the weather forecast for saturday. There is a fair chance of rain, but I really would like hike that day. I will send out an email on friday to finally confirm/cancel the hike.

So early. Hard for those of us in the City to make it out there.

I already have something planned for the 24th, so I will change my RSVP to "not attending."

Moved the hike to the 24th, due to the awful weather forecast.

Regarding the 5h estimate: that's the official estimate from the hiking book.

Weather policy: let's wait and see how the forecast will be, once we get closer to the weekend. I usually don't mind hiking in the rain - so I should be there

Thanks for the great new group and first hike. Right now the weather forecast is 60% chance of rain for Saturday. What's the weather policy?
