Tell us about your previous experience with chanting/kirtan (if any), or what intrigues you about it. We love hearing about your first kirtan experiences too (which kirtanista where, when?)

ॐ I originally discovered kirtan when I did a yoga teacher training in the late 90s. We would usually chant and meditate in the mornings, and our teacher played call-and-response chants on harmonium. I then saw Krishna Das at a church in the San Diego area in the early 2000s and was hooked! Chanting really took me to a peaceful place inside. Later when reading Patanjali's Yoga Sutras it explains this phenomenon: The bliss we feel in chanting kirtan (and the deep silence after chants) actually is our true nature, and it bursts forth (tadaa!) when our minds are stilled (Patanjali, sutra 1:3). Mantras are powerful. ॐ लोकाः समस्ता: सुखिनो भवन्तु ~ Om lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu ~ May all beings everywhere be happy ॐ

How did you hear about this group?

ॐ Created this group in 2009 ॐ

ॐ Kirtan has been an important spiritual practice for me and it is a joy to share together in the chanting experience. I also co-organize an ayurveda group here on meetup, the Ayurveda Community of the SF Bay: https://www.meetup...
