WORKSHOP DATES: Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 8

If you have never seen a Dawn Ascension of Hot Air Balloons, it is an awesome sight with the brilliant colors of fire against the pitch black sky.  The Reno festival is the largest Free Hot Air Balloon event in the United States with almost 100 incredible hot air balloons.(The Albequerque festival is larger but not free).

OPTIONAL CHEETAH RUN: On Sunday, there will be an optional trip to the Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary where they hold a Cheetah Run. We will also be able to take images of the many other animals in the Ark including Tigers, Cougars, Bears, Bobcats, etc.

This event is a fundraiser for the sanctuary. The fee for general admission to the Cheetah run and a space in the Grandstand is $40.00. All of the money from this admission fee goes only to the Animal Ark to support their animal rescue programs.

PHOTO BLINDS: All of the photo blind spaces have been taken, however, there are still spaces available in the Grandstand.

OPTIONAL VIRGINIA CITY CAMEL RACES: On Saturday, after the Hot Air Balloon Festival, there will be an optional trip to the 54rd Annual Virginia City Camel races featuring camels, ostriches, zebras and emus racing as jockeys from around the world compete. Before the races, there is a wonderful parade through historic downtown Virginia City. Plan for an day full of fun, laughs and outstanding photographs.

NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY: Reno at night is a wonderful location in which to capture a variety of very different images. We will show you how to use your camera in very different ways to create many unique compositions.

Our Trip last year was a great success and you see images that were uploaded in the link below:

http://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-Photography-Events/photos/10648712/

EVENT ORIENTATIONS: Prior to each of the events, there will be an orientation in which you will get a lot of tips about techniques and cameras settings to use to get the best images.

PRICE: $98.00 (not including hotel, meals, admissions or transportation.

PLEASE NOTE: The admission to the sanctuary for the Cheetah run is an extra cost.  It is $40.00 for the admission to the sanctuary and a seat in the Grandstand for the Cheetah run.  The cost for admission and a space in the photo blind is $60.00 and there are only a very limited number of spaces available so they sell out quickly.

GROUP RATE FOR HOTEL: We have reserved some rooms for the trip with a special group rate of only $69 plus tax per night for a single occupancy room.  If you want to share a room to reduce cost, we can help with that.

CAR POOLING:  We will be organizing car pools with 2 options  - an early departure leaving around 2:30 pm for those who are able to take off of work early and a second departure time leaving around 7 pm for those who cannot.

We ask passengers to pay all the cost of gas, tolls, etc.

This will be a really wonderful trip so I suggest that you reserve your space as soon as possible.

It was an awesome trip. I wish that I would have been up to hitting the Reno night life on Saturday night to take some pictures, but I was too tired. Thank you, Ed, for all of your hard work in organizing this event. I enjoyed meeting new people!

Special thanks to Ed for organizing this one. Quite a learning experience for me as a beginner. Thank you all.

Ed: Great job on putting this photo safari together. The opportunity to capture images of so many different things in one weekend was truly special. (Other than getting up at 3:15AM to catch "Dawn Patrol") The only difficult part of the meetup will be the hours I spend in Lightroom culling the truly magnificent images from the myriad of them that are merely beautiful. Thanks for your hard work.

Thanks to both CJ and Trifon. We certainly had a great weekend.

All I can say is that we were unbelievably lucky with the weather for these great events. There was virtually no smoke from the Yosemite fire in the air We saw the mass launch of almost 100 hot air balloons on both Saturday and Sunday and the skies were clear with no indication of smoke at all. The camel races were also a lot of fun and the weather was cooler than last year. Top that all off with absolutely clear skies for the cheetah run.

I saw a lot of outstanding images and everyone seemed to really enjoy the events so check out the photo gallery to see some of the images.

Hello Ed... I just found out I will not be able to make the trip. What is the refund policy for me. Which included the blinds, and hotel cost? I'm thinking I need to contact hotel myself.

    Sincerely

As we are nearing the event date, curious as to how the car pool will work and if there are rooms booked already. One of the mail thread was discussing about it but havent seen any confirmation. I am located in sunnyvale/campbell region, let me know where to start etc..

Is there any spot for the car pool at 7:00 pm available? and from where it's going to depart? Thanks :)

    September 4, 2013

    • Edward W.

We did not have anyone who wanted to go car pool at 7 pm - everyone is going at 3 pm.

      September 5, 2013

  • Edward W.

Great news! The Yosemite fire is now 80 percent contained and the air quality in Reno has improved to moderate.

We may be able to take one or two more people but we will need to close reservations on Thursday.

What kind of lense is suggested for cheetah run? I have a sony nex.
Also in general what kind of lenses will be used for night photography and hot air balloon. Any guidance will be of help. I have standard sony nex lenses and interested in getting new one if its not expensive.

    August 24, 2013

    • Edward W.

For the cheetah run, I recommend a telephoto zoom lens with about 200mm for your Sony camera. I used a wide angle zoom for the hot air balloons although I did switch to the telephoto for some shoots. Same for night photography, I used my 24-70 mm for most shots.

I booked 3-star hotel room for $48/night Expedia Unpublished Rate Hotel Circus Circus Hotel & Casino Reno
    500 N Sierra St, Reno, NV, 89503

      Get it from Expedia.com http://www.expedia.co...

      August 17, 2013

    • Edward W.

I know that Mr Tran was lucky enough to get that $48 rate (remember that you have to add the tax) but it is now higher and not that much less than the hotel we are using. In order to run a trip with this many people, it is very helpful to have everyone at the same hotel. Getting 20 rooms at the same hotel over a busy weekend is much harder than getting one or two rooms at a hotel. We are using a travel agency to handle this for us because I was not able to reserve 20 rooms at a hotel and they were. On Expedia there is another problem, they do not tell you the name of the hotel until you make a reservation and when I checked, the lowest rate was around $61 compared to our $69 rate. I think it is worth paying a few dollars more for the convenience of being in the same hotel as everyone else.

    August 7, 2013

Just a comment about the hotel. In order for us to run a trip like this with a minimum of problems, it is helpful if everyone stays at the same hotel. in the past, when one or two people decided to stay at a different hotel, they had big problems finding the rest of the group and missed out on some of the features of the trip.

We have a very full 2 days of activities planned for everyone so you will not spend very much time in your hotel anyway. Staying together will help us to run the best possible trip for everyone.

    Thanks.

  • Bruce F.

Edward, my friend cannot commit, she has family issues, so I am only RSVP for myself and I'll only need one blind space... Thanks

    July 31, 2013

  • Bob S.

I'm really bummed, I won't be able to attend this time because of my surgery. I went last year and LOVED it. Photographing the cheetahs from the blind was an unbelievable experience. I couldn't believe how fast they run, and it was so cool being so close to them as they ran by us. I had no idea they'd be running loose in the open like that. I highly recommend this event. I'll be going the next opportunity I get.

In response to a question, if you call the Animal Ark directly about a space in the photo blind, you will be told that they are all sold out and that is true, however, we have reserved 10 spaces for our group so you will be able reserve a space through us until our spaces are all taken. If you want a space, please reserve as soon as possible.

I did the Cheetah Run in the Blind with another group and if you can get a spot in the Blind, it's well worth it. It's exhilarating to have the cheetahs running towards you.

    July 19, 2013

    • Edward W.

You are absolutely right that the photo blind is the place to be but there are only a very limited number of spaces available so reserve as soon as possible to be sure to get one of them.
