What we're about

We started our poetry exchange meetings early in 2015 to present our own poems and share samples of contemporary Russian poetry. Since then, we have been meeting approximately once in a month, each time with a selected major topic or author to present. We accept all Slavic languages, contemporary, ancient and formation-stage (e.g. Siberian).

We usually read in rounds; responses to the previous reader are welcome but not obligatory. Bring your own masterpieces, or your friends', or any verses you'd like to share, or bring nothing and just come to attend - there is no obligatory degree of participation:) Both native speakers and language learners are welcome; translation service is provided on demand.

As a matter of custom, we start on Sundays, at 3 PM, and read until sunset.

We don't promise exhaustive coverage of Russian or Eastern European poetry, but do promise a broad coverage of it. If you think we are undeservedly underserving a particular topic, let us know, or simply come and share - we love collaborative research!

We some sort of partner with the Poetry Almanac of California - not that we had any written agreement, but we regularly get published there and we typically announce their annual events. We also perform at open microphones in Mountain View, San Francisco and Livermore.

Let you know if you'd like to see a poem translated to/from Russian or Ukrainian.

Online poetry talks (Zoom, phone) - West Coast and/or late nighters

We have received requests for a later-in-the-day poetry meeting (conference? connection?) and are therefore scheduling another online event at West Coast friendly time. While the Saturday open mic is mostly for reading and sharing, this Friday meeting may be more background-oriented; we may want to discuss biographies, influences, forms and descriptive tools. Suggest topics! To join from your computer (with or without video), install the application from https://zoom.us and use this direct link: https://zoom.us/j/611156713?pwd=T3czbWRWMkErRklHeFNmN3V2RENGZz09 To join by phone, use the following numbers: [masked] (West Coast, 7 PM) [masked] (East Coast, 10 PM) Enter[masked] for the meeting ID then[masked] for the password. The event is and will be announced elsewhere, so there would likely be more participants than the number of RSVPs on Meetup. You can invite your own guests. Spread the link! The translatedness of the event depends on who connects.

Online open mic (Zoom, phone)

Needs a location

To comply with the shelter-in-place directive, we are going online. Join us on Zoom for a makeshift online open mic on every other Saturday morning. Poems and short stories are welcome. We read in rounds in undefined order. Read your own, or your favorite, or just what struck you so much that you want to share. The time is chosen to accommodate East Coast and international participants: - 10 AM Pacific time; - 12 AM Chicago time; - 1 PM East Coast time; - 5 PM GMT; - 8 PM Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kyiv. To join from your computer (with or without video), install the application from https://zoom.us and enter[masked] in the "Join meeting" window. Password:[masked] Direct link: https://zoom.us/j/611156713?pwd=T3czbWRWMkErRklHeFNmN3V2RENGZz09 To join by phone, use the following numbers: [masked] (West Coast) [masked] (East Coast) [masked] (St. Petersburg) [masked] (Moscow) ...contact us for a phone number in your area (Europe is covered). Once you hear a prompt, enter the meeting ID (only the numbers) + and the password. The event is announced elsewhere, so there would likely be more participants than the number of RSVPs on Meetup. You can invite your own guests. Spread the link! There will be Russian poems, but we aren't planning to keep the event Russian only. We may want to launch another open mic in the evening, for the Western Hemisphere / Pacific, mostly in English (optionally Spanish, French?).
