Learn about Lace at Britex Fabrics & Pattern Giveaway!

Our March meetup will take place at Britex Fabrics in San Francisco! Natalie, who manages the notions floor at Britex, will be sharing her expertise on lace with us. She has a passion for historical costuming and is an expert on all things lace. Her discussion will include:

• terminology

• styles of lace, what to consider when choosing lace (i.e. weight of lace to fabric)

• how lace is made

• care (prewash or not?)

• various applications of lace (not just bridal and formal wear)

• tea dyeing

Natalie will also compile a handout listing helpful tutorials for working with lace. This meetup will start on the first floor in the back, near the lace fabrics and then will go up to the third floor (notions) and look at lace trim.

After Natalie's talk, we'll convene on the fourth floor. If you've made anything with lace, feel free to bring your finished garments or WIPs (works in progress) to discuss your successes, failures, fears, and questions.

IMPORTANT: Space is limited. There will be 20 chairs but room for 30 maximum. Please read the entire description for details on RSVPs.

We are giving away TWO patterns at this meetup! Sew Chic Pattern Company, an indie pattern company specializing in modern designs with a vintage flair, is sending its Valentine lingerie sewing pattern, which uses lace:

AND its lovely Beatrice Pocket Dress, which can be made with lace fabric. This version was made using satin with an overlay of lace:

The other version of the Beatrice dress on Sew Chic's site uses a red plaid. You can check it out here. I bought this pattern last year because I really liked the neckline and the pocket detail. Thank you designer Laura Nash for donating your two beautiful patterns!

Hi, I wrote a blog post about our lace meetup, which you can see here: http://csews.com/bay-area-sewists/learning-about-lace-at-britex-fabrics

And I added a page with Natalie's list of lace info/tutorials and hyperlinked all the sources she listed: http://csews.com/bay-area-sewists/lace-tutorials-and-info

At the meetup I couldn't remember the name of the other Fray Check product I've used. It's Fray Block by June Tailor. It's thinner than Fray Check and less stiff. It comes in a metal tube and you have to run it under hot water for 30 seconds before you use it. I like it better than Fray Check, which can dry very stiff and scratchy.

Thank you again, Chuleenan! Question for all: someone at the meetup mentioned a local bra making class--did anyone pick up any more details? I forgot to ask.

Looks like I won't be going after all. My Granddaughter has a softball game and I want to show my support as this is new for her. Have fun everyone!

Well, I'm triple booked tomorrow and my allergies are horrendous as well. I had to take my inhaler after walking my dog! I'm going to have to pick the event which will keep me indoors the longest so I will have to cancel tomorrow. I will change my RSVP to no. Hope everyone has fun and please post pics and maybe a summary for those of us who couldn't make it. Thanks so much!

Madelin, it's easy to take BART to Powell St Station. Britex is only a block or two away.
