• Fabric Swap, 300 patterns + Special Guest Pauline Kossiwa on Sewing Stripes!
Ready to do some destashing? It's time to go through your fabric and see what you'd like to give to another sewist. Bring your yardage (1/2 yard minimum) or fabric that's the wrong color/print/fiber content for you but could be great on someone else. Please label your fabric, note the yardage and whether it's cotton, wool, rayon, poly, a blend, etc. Sort your fabric by type: wovens, knits, silk, home dec, etc. so you can quickly put them on the appropriate tables. If you don't know the fiber content, don't worry. We'll have a "mystery fabric" table for unknown origin. (See below for details.) NOTE: There is a $5 nonrefundable fee to attend this event to cover the rental fee. Lacis is charging us a low rate per person to use the space. Refunds will only be issued if the event is canceled or rescheduled. UPDATE! A dressmaker in Oakland is donating 300 patterns (1980s to present) for us to take. You are welcome to take as many as you want. The fabric swap has 4 selection rounds.* For each piece of fabric you get to participate in one selection round. For example, if you brought at least 3 pieces of fabric, you get to select one piece of fabric for the first three rounds. The last round is open to all! *You can use your round of choosing to select a fabric or get patterns or both. After the swap is over, Bay Area Sewists member Pauline Kossiwa, will show many of the striped garments she's sewn and discuss her techniques for sewing stripes using knit and woven fabrics. She's the Queen of Stripes - and often uses ready-to-wear fashion as her inspiration. • Let's Discuss Mixing Fabric Prints at Britex Fabrics
Have you ever wondered how to combine different fabric prints in one garment or in an ensemble? Come to this meetup and hear from Dina Fayer, the store manager of Britex Fabrics, about how to mix and match prints that look good together. We’ll look at a variety of combinations and you can see what works, what clashes and what to avoid. All attendees will get 20% off regularly priced fabrics at Britex on the meetup day. Be sure to set aside time for browsing! This meetup is limited to 25 attendees. Please join the waitlist if you'd like to attend. IMPORTANT: RSVPs will close on Friday, August 24 at 5 pm. If you RSVP and your plans change, please change your RSVP to "No." When this meetup is full, please join the waitlist. There are always last-minute cancellations so it's very likely you will be able to attend. Note: If you are on the waitlist and you can no longer attend, please remove yourself from the waitlist so the next person on the waitlist can move up. What to bring: Notebook to take notes. Phone/camera to take photos. How to get there: If you are taking public transportation, get off at the Montgomery BART stop and walk a little over one block down Post St. to get to Britex, which is at 117 Post St., next to Gumps. Many Muni lines run near Britex, which is less than 2 blocks from Market St. IMPORTANT: BART will be doing track work this weekend between the 19th St. and West Oakland stops. They will be running free buses between 19th and West Oakland. Please allow plenty of extra time to get to San Francisco. The bus ride will be 10-15 minutes according to BART. Trains from Richmond, Antioch and Dublin will be running every 20 minutes. More details here: http://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2018/news20180709-0 If you are driving, it is tough to find street parking. But there are parking garages in the Union Square area. The Sutter Stockton garage is likely your cheapest option - 444 Stockton (at Sutter). Union Square garage is also reasonable - 333 Post St. They are each 3 to 4 blocks from Britex.

  • Pattern Swap + MyBodyModel Giveaway!
It's time for another pattern swap! We only do pattern swaps twice a year so it's a great opportunity to pass along patterns, find something new and meet other sewists. After the pattern swap is done, we'll break up into a couple of small groups and discuss our favorite patterns and the patterns we got at the swap. Bring one (or more) of your favorite patterns to show the group - and maybe even wear the garment(s) you made from the pattern. If you bring at least three patterns, you can participate in the first three rounds of the swap. The fourth round is a free for all. If you bring fewer than three patterns, then you can participate in the number of rounds equal to the number of patterns you brought. For example, if you brought two patterns, you can participate in the first two rounds of the swap. It's totally fine if you don't bring a pattern, you can just want until the first three rounds are done, and then we will have one final round where anyone can take whatever they want. Leftover patterns will be donated to the Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics free bin or East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse in Oakland. ***It's fine if the pattern pieces are cut - just be sure no pattern pieces or instructions are missing. *** IMPORTANT: Please sort your patterns into the following categories: accessories, dresses, skirts, pants, jackets/suits, coats, lingerie, sleepwear, menswear, children's, crafts, vintage, miscellaneous. When you arrive, just put your patterns on the tables, which are labeled with the various categories. Giveaway - MyBodyModel custom template! MyBodyModel is a body-positive design tool that makes fashion sketch templates to your body measurements. So you can see what a garment will look like on you, before you invest in making it. No more trying to guess based on model photos! With MyBodyModel custom templates, you can have fun experimenting with all your fashion ideas by drawing on a model that looks like you. MyBodyModel is giving away a download of a custom template to one Bay Area Sewists member! You get one entry for the giveaway for each pattern you bring - for a maximum of four entries. You can try the beta version of the app for free, and pay only if you choose to download. Check it out @mybodymodel (on Instagram) and https://www.mybodymodel.com/. Thank you Erica of MyBodyModel for offering this giveaway! MyBodyModel's beta launch began this week. You can get 20% off your custom template until June 20 if you sign up for the MyBodyModel email list the website: https://www.mybodymodel.com/ Discount at Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics! The designer will be sending a kit for her Falda Midi Skirt (https://makingpatternsfly.com/tienda/faldas/fal203/) and her Vestido Campana sleeveless dress (https://makingpatternsfly.com/tienda/vestidos/ves301/). Christine Groom restarted her dream in 2015 of fashion designing and launching a home business, Zig Zag Designs by Christine (http://christinegroom.com). A graduate of FIDM SF, she designs and sews garment patterns for private custom clients. In December 2017 released her first pattern for the home sewer, the Rosita Jacket, which will be our PDF pattern giveaway.
