Kings Mountain Road Woodside

This is a long ride with climbings.
This ride will have us climb Kings Mountain Road in Woodside.
http://graphics.stanford.edu/~lucasp/grade/kingsmountain.html

To get there we will have to ride from SF to Woodside. After the climb we will descend via Tunitas Creek Rd to Hwy 1 and return to SF. On the way back, we will ride through Tom Lantos Tunnel in Half Moon Bay.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQXYcIiUA6I

Entire route should be about 85 miles. Please consider the miles and climbing before RSVP. Pace will be slow/touring speed but you are welcome to ride at your pace and regroup (or not if you know the way). Please carry with you things you need for a self-sufficient ride. It will probably be an adventurous day.

Lunch: we can buy lunch in Woodside and eat after the climb.

Route: SF-Woodside-Halfmoon Bay-Pacifica-SF

Note: From Woodside, if you want to bail, you can ride to Caltrain station. Otherwise, you are committed.

Thanks for leading Peter. It was a great ride and nice group of people. There were a few who asked about the Tri event in August. It is on Sunday aug 25 in Lake Tahoe. Here is the link -http://www.laketahoetri.com/

First ride with the group! I know Aaron asked where we should park, is there an address I can throw onto my GPS to direct me there? I'm coming from Santa Clara.

    July 19, 2013

    • Peter

Hi Paul, address is 55 Music Concourse Drive, San Francisco, CA. Once you get to the park there should be plenty of parking. Then just ride over to the Academy of Sciences.

I am bummed I cannot make it next Saturday! 85 miles would have been a bit much for me though. Have a great ride! Is anyone training for the Best Buddies Ride along Highway One on 9/7? I just registered.

    July 14, 2013

    • Peter

Jenny, are you doing the century ride on that challenge. Should be a very scenic ride.

Can't make it next week. I've biked in the Woodside area a lot, but haven't done Kings Mountain yet. Old La Honda was quite a climb though.

Looks like a good climb, anyone have a map of the ride

    July 6, 2013

    • Peter

Hi James, I don't have the map of this ride but you can try searching on sites such as mapmyride, ridewithgps or stava.

I'm out of town this weekend, looks like a great ride though! Hope it happens again and I can check it out next time.

    July 5, 2013

    • Peter

Ryan, I am sure it will happen again. May be under slow group/fast group format. : )

      July 5, 2013

  • Vigyan

Hi Peter, Any thoughts on how this ride would compare to this Saturday's ride to Point Reys?

    July 2, 2013

    • Peter

This will be a harder ride. I would say quite harder.

      July 2, 2013

  • Kris

Any slower riders please rest assured that you will not be alone. I am still rehabilitating a knee injury and also am on a Tri-Cross, my speed ave. will probably be between 8-11. Soooo looking forward to a nice long ride! :-D This is great training for Gran Fondo!

  • Cristina

Hi Peter - What would you say is slow/touring speed? Will we be taking skyline to Woodside? Thanks so much!!

    June 30, 2013

    • Peter

Great. See you Cristina. Don't worry about speed. Ride your own pace.

      June 30, 2013

    • Cristina

Thanks Peter - that's helpful. I usually average slightly above 11 (according to Strava) but the Kings Mountain Road climb looks like it will be the longest climb I've done - so this will be good. Cheers!

Hey Peter, have you ever considered going the opposite direction? Tunitas Creek Rd has blind switchbacks, so is better for ascending, with Kings Mountain for a somewhat faster (and/or safer) descent. Plus, there's a Caltrain option for anyone who needs to bail early.

    June 30, 2013

    • jiro

I second the ascent on Tunitas Creek. I don't know Kings Mountain, so I can't vouch for that descent.

      June 30, 2013

    • Peter

Thanks. Will do that on another ride.

      June 30, 2013

  • Peter

Hello Michael, Parikshit, Amy. Another potential adventure.

    June 30, 2013

  • Kris

Looking forward to this ride, thank you Peter!!
