- How is Big Data impacting HealthCare
Hello, Time to connect over our beloved Big Data topic. This time we would drill down into Healthcare and how Big Data is shaping that industry. Agenda: 6:00 – 7:00pm Mix and mingle. 7:00 – 7:05 pm Welcome Keynote - Mike Vedda, Chief Information Officer, Genomic Health, Inc. 7:05 – 7:40 pm Big Data Management for Life Sciences & Healthcare Data Lakes – Presented by John Haddad from Informatica 7:40 – 8:25 pm Using Big Data for Precision Cancer Treatment – Presented by James Han from Genomic Health Inc. 8:25 – 9:00 pm The Benefits of Reanalyzing the World's Largest Pan-Cancer Data Initiative – Presented by Singer Ma from DNA Nexus Session 1: Big Data Management for Life Sciences & Healthcare Data Lakes In the world of big data the emergence of data lakes has become a popular information architecture design pattern for collecting, preparing, and delivering data for analytics. Healthcare providers and payers and life sciences companies are building data lakes to improve patient outcomes, reduce patient readmits, lower total cost of care, discover new drugs and therapies for existing drugs, increase clinical trial efficiency and patient recruitment, improve patient safety and regulatory compliance. This session will describe the use-cases for a healthcare and clinical data lake, how to build an intelligent data lake, present a data lake reference architecture, and recommend best practices related to big data management such as integration, governance, and security. Speaker: John Haddad is Senior Director of Big Data Product & Technical Marketing at Informatica. He has over 25 years’ experience developing and marketing enterprise software. Today, he advises organizations on Big Data best practices from a management and technology perspective. Session 2: Big data is playing an important role in realizing the promise of personalized medicine. Please join us and learn about how large genomic datasets are being used in cancer diagnostics to guide therapy selection for late-stage cancer patients. We’ll discuss where data is making an impact in cancer diagnostics and key challenges that remain. Speaker: James Han is the Director of Bioinformatics at Genomic Health where is he responsible for analysis of next generation sequencing data. He has worked in Genomics for over 10 years developing data analysis methods for use in high-volume commercial and scientific research settings. Session 3: The Benefits of Reanalyzing the World's Largest Pan-Cancer Data Initiative: Reprocessing TCGA data with a single methodology across standardized mutation callers will make the tumor data much more relevant to the community. DNAnexus utilized uniform and sensitive analytical treatment through version-controlled analyses and tools, that would have been challenging to replicate at any single facility within a reasonable time frame. By having a standardized set of mutation calls obtained by several callers, researchers will be able to identify genetic alterations contributing to cancer that are shared between tumors independent of the tissue-of-origin. We are optimistic that having access to such information will spur advancement in precision medicine. Speaker: Singer Ma, DNAnexus Scientist. Singer has worked on analysis for The Cancer Genome Atlas at UCSC focusing on somatic single nucleotide mutation calling across multiple cancer types and the comparative analysis thereof.
