• BCO Hiking in Houston - Hike Lake Houston Park!
Let's enjoy a fall week-end hike in the quiet and peaceful Lake Houston Wilderness Park. Lake Houston Wilderness Park encompasses 4,786.6 acres of wooded parkland, approximately 30 minutes north of downtown Houston off of Highway 59 near the town of New Caney. Surprisingly, this is actually a City of Houston Park, recently under development to provide more outdoor activities, including hiking, canoeing, biking, horse-back riding, and camping. It's a fun place to explore. To reach the park from Houston, take US Highway 59 north to the New Caney exit, FM 1485; travel east ~2.5 miles to new park entrance, located on the south side of the road. (Note, continue past Baptist Encampment Road with flashing yellow light.) When you reach the entrance gate after a short drive, turn right on the Loop Road, then right on Nature Center Road, until you come to a parking lot on the left in sight of the nature center. We'll meet at 12:45 PM for an 1 PM hike, and hike 4-6 miles (RT) on wooded trails and along pleasant creeks. Look for group (and the BCO sign) in Nature Center parking lot for Lake Houston Park at 12:45 PM. Bring your camera, a snack, water, and comfortable walking shoes. A $3 entry fee is required for all visitors ages 13 – 64. (Please, give yourself plenty of timet o find the start location, We will leave right at 1:00) Pets are not allowed in buildings in the park. All pets must be kept on a leash. And this is a long hike so please be sure your dog is up to it. • BCO Graffiti Art & Bike Ride
Have you checked out the outdoor artwork adorning the city these days? Graffiti has moved from outlaw to street art, and some of the top artists and newcomers are spraying it up, right here in Houston. We’ll be riding around H-town while checking out some of the more prominent and promising graphics to be seen. Most of the ride today is on the streets of Houston, so DON’T forget your helmet – if you do, we will have a few to lend. Want to preview some of the art we will be seeing? Check out http://www.gulfcoastgraffiti.com . Meet in the gravel parking lot of El Tiempo, and we will ride out from there. Grab lunch if you get there early, we will hang out after the ride and enjoy the libations and tasty Mexican food. From El Tiempo, we’re going to ride east and check out all the Harrisburg trails and on to Braes Bayou trails. We’ll wind our way back to Navigation around 5:00 to hang out and chat! No bike? No worries! You can pick up a bike from Bike Barn (http://bikebarn.com) who has a great rental shop at their Bayou Rental shop 105 Sabine St. Houston, Texas 77007 on Buffalo Bayou at Hidden Lake. • 11th Annual BCO Haunted Hike
Get your spooky on with BCO as we hike and slither our way through Memorial Park wooded trails and off the beaten path. What better to do on Halloween than to taunt the forest trolls? For those who make it out of the forest in one piece, we’ll fortify ourselves with pizza and beverages and toast those we left behind :) just kidding!! Tap into your inner wolf or go all vampy on us, or come as your witchy self. Leave the bars to the zombies and join us in the woods for some quality and creepy exercise and socializing at Memorial Park. We meet at 6:30 and depart at 6:45 PM sharp from somewhere around the the rugby/soccer field parking lot on the south side (check the map and then look for the BCO signs) there’s a lot of construction at the Park these days. For you chickens out there - just come to the after-party starting around 8 PM in the parking lot. Don’t get left in the dark and don’t forget to wear walking shoes (it is a hike no matter how dead you are), a flashlight, bug spray, and $5.00 for pizza. Open to members, guests and the public (we love fresh meat) – bring a friend or come alone, if you dare. You'll be sure to find a devil or two to talk to. (Please no dogs at this hike) Yummy! For those who join us for the after-hike party, we'll be enjoying tasty beverages compliments of Karbach Brewing Co.! *Bring $5 cash for pizza and your favorite after hike beverage (NO glass bottles). • BCO Farmer’s Market Bike Ride
NEW MARKETS - Houston! We have a new Market in Midtown and longtime Urban Harvest Market is at new digs (get it? :)) and is growing. Join us as we navigate a new route, to new markets for an old favorite! Grocery stores are so overrated! Pedal with us this Saturday for a fun weekend ride that will leave your taste buds and souls enriched and support our wonderful Houston Farmers Markets. Did you know many of our local restaurateurs’ shop at our Houston Farmers' Markets each week? There they find the best handcrafted cheeses, local produce, baked goods and locally sourced organic meats, and you can too! Our mission is to pedal fast enough to beat them before they take all the goods in the market, but slow enough to enjoy every revolution of the ride. We’re experts at finding the perfect balance! We’ll meander our way down side streets, trails and residential areas you never knew existed in the heart of Houston. First, we’ll wake ourselves up with the delicious aroma of a leisurely Onion Creek coffee. After our caffeine kicks in, we’ll cruise off to the markets to shop for fresh produce, sauces, jams and delicious baked bread. This 12-15 mile ride lasts about three hours, so bring plenty of water and a backpack to carry all your goodies home! Plan on sticking around after the ride to enjoy lunch at Onion Creek Cafe. They are a locally owned eatery with great food, atmosphere, brews, and friends! No bike? No worries! Houston has great rental options. Choose from: B-Cycle Kiosk: Looking for the quickest rental option? B-Cycle allows you to rent via mobile app. There are many stations around town to pick up and drop off your rental. Check their map and pricing options information here: http://houston.bcycle.com . Bike Barn: Prefer a person to person transaction and/or a faster bike? Then you should check out Bike Barn. We love their rental shop at their Bayou location: 105 Sabine St. Houston, Texas 77007 on Buffalo Bayou at Hidden Lake. BCO Member Gear: If you are a member of Bayou City Outdoors and do not have a bike, we can loan you a bike for the ride.
